Best Loan App for Low Credit Score: How to Choose the Right One

Best loan app for low credit score means the app that fits your situation, because no single app is best for everyone. Look for an app linked to an RBI-regulated lender that discloses the APR and Key Fact Statement before you sign. Check whether the loan is suitable for your credit profile and whether the repayments fit comfortably within your budget.

Key Summary

  • The best loan app for low credit score is one RBI lists, with APR and fees shown upfront.

  • Check your score first: your own check is a soft enquiry, but every app application is a hard one.

  • On ₹50,000 over 12 months, 30% interest costs about ₹4,050 more than 16%.

  • RBI rules bar lending apps from your contacts, photos and call logs, and give you at least 1 day to exit.

  • If your EMIs already take over 50% of take-home pay, another app loan adds strain.

What Is the Best Loan App for a Low Credit Score?

The best loan app for low credit score is the one that passes a few clear tests for your situation, whatever any ranking says. “Best” depends on three things: your score band, your income, and what the app really costs once fees are added. So before you shortlist anything, find out your exact number. Whether you bank with SBI or not, an SBI CIBIL score check free online takes a few minutes and won’t touch your score.

Scores run from 300 to 900. Some commonly used guides describe scores below 650 as low and scores of 750 or above as strong. However, credit-score categories vary, and lenders apply their own eligibility criteria. But every lender sets its own cut-off. A score one app rejects may be fine for another, so there’s no universal line.

One more thing before you start. Many “top 10 loan app” lists online are written by the very apps they rank. It makes more sense to judge an app by RBI’s rules than by its spot on someone’s list.

Here are the four tests that make an app right for a low-score borrower:

  • It’s listed in RBI’s directory. The app should appear in RBI’s list of digital lending apps and be linked to a bank or NBFC (non-banking financial company).
  • It shows the APR and Key Fact Statement before you agree. APR is the all-in yearly cost, fees included. The KFS (Key Fact Statement) is a one-page summary of every charge.
  • It lends to your score band. An app that rejects most people at your score only adds a hard enquiry to your report.
  • The EMI fits under the 50% line. Your total EMIs, the new one included, should stay under half your take-home pay.

Want the reason behind your number, too? FREED’s Credit Insights shows your score and the exact entries pulling it down. Checking it is a soft enquiry, so your score stays untouched.

The rest of this guide shows you how to run each test. First, it helps to see why a low score makes every app loan cost more.

Why Do Loan Apps Charge More When Your Credit Score Is Low?

A low score usually comes from a rough patch. A few EMIs slipped over some months, or a card balance kept rolling for a while. That’s common, and it’s fixable. But lenders read it the same way every time.

Banks call this risk-based pricing. The lender sees a higher chance of missed payments, so it charges a higher rate to cover that risk. Interest rates on app-based loans vary considerably depending on the lender, loan product, borrower profile and applicable fees. Always compare the APR in the Key Fact Statement rather than relying on a general rate range. Here’s what that range means in rupees on a ₹50,000 loan over 12 months.

Interest rate (yearly)EMI on ₹50,000, 12 monthsTotal repaidInterest paid
16%₹4,537₹54,439₹4,439
24%₹4,728₹56,736₹6,736
30%₹4,874₹58,492₹8,492
36%₹5,023₹60,277₹10,277

Rates and ranges shown are indicative. Final terms decided by the bank. FREED is not a Loan Provider. No outcome is guaranteed. Please verify directly with your bank.

Look at the first and third rows. At 30%, you pay about ₹4,050 more than at 16% for the same ₹50,000. For many families, that’s close to a month’s groceries, gone to interest alone.

Then there’s the processing fee, the part most people miss. Many apps take the fee out of the loan before the money reaches you. Say the fee is 3%: that’s ₹1,500, plus 18% GST of ₹270, so ₹1,770 in all. You receive ₹48,230, but you repay EMIs on the full ₹50,000. At 30% interest, that pushes the APR (the real yearly cost, fees included) to about 37.2%.

So an app showing “30% interest” can really cost you over 7 points more. Very short loans, like 7-day loans, can cost far more again, and our guide to low CIBIL score loan apps walks through that example. This is why finding the best loan app for low credit score starts with cost, not speed. And the cheapest way to cut that cost is knowing your score before you apply anywhere.

Want to test a real offer before you sign? FREED’s Debt Calculator, further down this page, takes any app’s rate and processing fee and shows the true cost in rupees.

Why Should You Check Your CIBIL Score Before Applying to Any Loan App?

Say someone with a 620 score needs ₹40,000 for a family wedding. One evening, they apply on five apps, one after another. Four say no. And each of those five applications has left a hard enquiry on their report, which can pull an already low score lower.

Here’s the difference that matters. Checking your own score is a soft enquiry, and it doesn’t affect your score at all. A lender pulling your report because you applied is a hard enquiry, and several close together can hurt. Here’s more on soft vs hard enquiry.

SBI customers may have access to credit-score checking through eligible SBI channels. Non-customers should check the current eligibility and charges of the available official credit-report services before proceeding. So you can check your CIBIL score through SBI for free before you go near an app. It’s the simplest way to check CIBIL score free before applying.

Once your report opens, look at these five things first:

  • Overdue accounts or DPD. DPD (Days Past Due) shows how many days a payment was late. A recent overdue line can stop an approval, so clear it first if you can.
  • “Settled” or “Written-off” marks. Lenders read these as debt that wasn’t fully repaid. Knowing they’re there helps you pick an app type that still lends to you.
  • High card use. A card near its limit makes you look stretched. Paying it down before you apply can help at the next bureau update.
  • Recent enquiries. Count how many lenders checked you in the last few months. If the list is already long, wait before adding more.
  • Entries you don’t recognise. A loan that isn’t yours can drag your score down for no reason. Here’s how to fix a wrong entry.

FREED’s Credit Insights flags each of these on your Experian report, so you don’t have to hunt line by line. If an entry looks wrong, you can raise a dispute from there in a few steps. Over 30,000 people trust it to keep an eye on their report.

Your score may also look a little off between bureaus and apps. A 20 to 30 point gap is common, since each bureau updates on its own dates, so don’t panic over it. Here’s how Experian and CIBIL scores compare.

Once you know your number, you can match it to the right type of app. That’s the first real step toward the best loan app for low credit score.

FREED Expert Tip

Check your report and fix wrong entries before applying anywhere. A disputed error that gets corrected can lift your score without a single new loan.

Which Type of Loan App Suits Your Credit Score?

Loan apps aren’t all built the same way. Some belong to banks, some to NBFCs, and some only show offers from other lenders. Which type is the best loan app for low credit score in your case depends mostly on your score band.

App typeWho actually lendsScore flexibility (commonly reported)Cost (commonly reported)Watch out for

Secured options: gold loan, FD-backed cardBank or NBFCHigh, backed by gold or FDUsually lowerGold at risk or FD locked if you miss payments

Your salary bank may offer competitive terms based on your existing relationship, while other lenders may assess applications differently. Compare the APR, fees and repayment conditions before choosing. One RBI rule helps on marketplace apps: from 1 November 2025, they must show every matching offer with the lender’s name, amount, tenure, APR, monthly repayment and penal charges, plus a link to the KFS. So you can compare like with like before choosing. An instant loan app for low credit score usually sits in the NBFC or credit-line rows.

Not sure where your score leaves you? Credit Insights comes with a 24x7 AI Credit Expert. Ask it plain questions like “can I qualify for a better personal loan?”, and it answers from your own report.

Secured products may have different eligibility requirements because they are backed by collateral or a fixed deposit. However, compare the costs and risks carefully, including the possibility of losing pledged assets if repayments are missed. Whichever type you choose, run the same safety and cost checks next.

How to Pick the Best Loan App for a Low Credit Score

These 8 checks come straight from RBI’s Digital Lending Directions, 2025 (circular RBI/2025-26/36, dated 8 May 2025). Any app you shortlist as the best loan app for low credit score should pass all of them.

  1. Find the app in RBI’s DLA directory. Go to RBI’s website, then Citizen’s Corner, then “DLAs deployed by Regulated Entities”. It shows which bank or NBFC stands behind the app.
  2. Confirm the real lender’s name. The lender’s own website must list its apps and loan partners (para 8(iv)). If the app’s name isn’t there, stop.
  3. Read the APR and Key Fact Statement before saying yes. The KFS shows every charge in one place (para 8(i)). Compare the APR, not the headline rate.
  4. Make sure the money comes straight to your bank account. RBI bars disbursal into a third-party or agent account, and repayments must go straight to the lender (para 9). Any request to pay someone else is a red flag.
  5. Refuse any separate “service fee” from the app or its partner. The lender pays its partners directly (para 9(iv)). They can’t charge you on the side.
  6. Deny access to contacts, photos and call logs. RBI bars apps from these (para 12(i)). Camera, mic or location can be used only once, for KYC, with your consent.
  7. Check the cooling-off period. You can exit by repaying the principal plus proportionate APR, with no penalty, within a period of at least 1 day (para 10(i)). Use it if the final terms don’t match what you were shown.
  8. Note the grievance officer’s name. Every lender must name one (para 11). If you get no reply within 30 days, you can go to the RBI Ombudsman.

One catch on step 1. People often search for “RBI approved loan apps”, but RBI doesn’t approve apps one by one. It publishes the directory as lenders report it and doesn’t validate that data, which is why step 2 matters. RBI’s rules also bar lenders from raising your credit limit automatically without your explicit request (para 7(ii)).

If an app breaks these rules or its agents harass you, here’s how to file a complaint against a fake loan app. FREED Shield may provide support to borrowers dealing with abusive recovery practices, subject to the service's scope and eligibility. And remember, an app can pass all 8 checks and still be wrong for you if the EMI doesn’t fit.

What the law says

How Much Loan App EMI Can You Afford on Your Salary?

Once your total EMIs take more than 50% of your take-home salary, things get tight fast. Rent, school fees and groceries still need paying, and one surprise expense can push an EMI past its due date. Even the best loan app for low credit score can’t fix an EMI that’s too big for your salary.

Here’s how it plays out. Say you earn ₹30,000 a month take-home and already pay ₹11,000 in EMIs. You take ₹50,000 from an app at 30% for 12 months, which adds an EMI of ₹4,874.

  • Before the app loan: ₹11,000 in EMIs, about 37% of salary.
  • After, at 30%: ₹15,874 in EMIs, about 53% of salary, past the 50% line.
  • After, at 16%: ₹15,537 in EMIs, still about 52%.

That last line surprises people. A lower rate helps, but it doesn’t fix an amount that’s simply too big for your income.

This example is illustrative. Rates and ranges shown are indicative. Final terms decided by the bank. FREED is not a Loan Provider. No outcome is guaranteed.

If this looks like you, there are three sensible moves. Consider whether you can reduce the borrowing amount or postpone the expense. Compare repayment periods carefully, as a longer tenure may increase the total interest paid. If possible, address issues in your credit report before applying again.

Before you add any EMI, FREED’s EMI Score reads your income, savings and current loans, and shows exactly where you stand. It’s free and has no effect on your credit score.

If you’re already past 50%, or you need the app loan to pay another loan, the next section is for you.

What Are Your Options If Loan Apps Keep Rejecting You?

A rejection isn’t a verdict on you. It’s a signal to fix something specific first. If even the best loan app for low credit score keeps saying no, try these in order:

  • Fix report errors, then wait for the update. A corrected entry can lift your score with no new loan at all. These ways to increase your CIBIL score help once errors are cleared.
  • Ask your salary bank about a pre-approved offer. Your bank already sees your salary every month. That history can count for more than your score alone.
  • Add a co-applicant with a stronger score. A spouse or parent with a healthy score can make approval easier. They share responsibility for the loan, so talk it through first.
  • Look at secured routes. A gold loan or an FD-backed card often works when unsecured apps say no.
  • Space your applications out. One application a month beats five in one evening, every time.

Now the honest part. If you’re looking for an app loan to pay another EMI, a new loan usually deepens the hole. It buys a month and adds a second EMI on top of the first. Here’s more on how to escape the debt trap.

If you’re still paying but juggling several EMIs, consolidation (merging all loans into one EMI) may suit you better. Here’s how consolidation works for people with bad credit. Unsure if it fits your case? FREED’s team can look at your loans and tell you whether the Loan Consolidation Plan suits you, before you take another app loan.

Settlement is not something a borrower chooses out of preference. Banks consider it only when repaying in full has become genuinely impossible, and the “Settled” mark stays on your report for up to 7 years. If that’s where you are, read our guide to personal loan settlement first.

How FREED Helps If a Low Credit Score Is Holding Back Your Loan Options

Finding the best loan app for low credit score gets much easier once you know two things: why your score is low, and whether one more EMI fits. FREED is India’s trusted loan management platform, and over 20 lakh people trust it. The founding team of FREED brings over 50 years of combined experience in the US loan settlement industry. Here’s what FREED does for you in each situation.

If You Don’t Know Why Your Score Is Low

FREED identifies exactly what is pulling your credit score down and gives you a personalised action plan to improve it. That’s what Credit Insights does. It shows your score and full report, and points to the specific entries hurting you, like a card near its limit or an old overdue line.

It’s available to anyone, not only FREED customers, and over 30,000 people trust it. It uses Experian’s report, refreshes monthly and lets you raise a dispute in a few steps. Checking is a soft enquiry, so it never costs you points.

If You’re Unsure Whether One More EMI Fits

Your EMI Score tells you how healthy your finances really are. It reads your income, savings and current loans, and shows exactly where you stand. Run it before you apply on any app, so you know whether the new EMI keeps you under the 50% line.

If You’re Paying Several App or Card EMIs

FREED’s Loan Consolidation Plan is for people who can still repay but need a smarter way to manage their debt. FREED assesses your profile and matches you to a lending partner from its network. One new loan pays off your existing app and card loans at once, leaving one EMI on one date. This can reduce your monthly EMI burden by up to 50%.* Your score doesn’t drop because of consolidation, and it tends to improve as you pay one loan on time.

Eligibility depends on your profile. If you’re unsure whether you qualify, talk to FREED’s team. They’ll assess your situation and let you know if you’re eligible. So far, FREED has helped consolidate over ₹320 crore in loans.

*Rates and ranges shown are indicative. Final terms decided by the bank. FREED is not a Loan Provider. No outcome is guaranteed. Please verify directly with your bank.

And if a loan app’s recovery has turned abusive or threatening, FREED Shield is available to everyone. FREED helps you understand your legal rights as a borrower, report inappropriate recovery practices, and raise complaints with your lender.

What Helps You Get a Better Deal From a Loan App?

Once you’ve found the best loan app for low credit score in your band, a few habits get you better terms and a cleaner record.

  • Apply to one app at a time. Wait for the eligibility check before you hit submit. Every full application is a hard enquiry, so make each one count.
  • Ask for the KFS and compare APR. The headline rate leaves out fees. The APR on the KFS doesn’t.
  • Borrow only what you need. A smaller amount means a smaller EMI and a quicker payoff.
  • Use the cooling-off window if terms change. If the final offer doesn’t match what you were shown, you can exit within the cooling-off period by repaying the principal plus proportionate APR.
  • Repay on time, because it counts. App loans from regulated lenders are reported to credit bureaus under RBI’s rules (para 16). So a small loan repaid on time, every month, can help rebuild the very score that made borrowing expensive.
  • Check your report 30 to 45 days after the loan ends. Confirm it shows as closed and not active. Here’s how a closed loan updates on your report. If you use Credit Insights, its monthly refresh shows the change as soon as it’s reported.

A low score narrows your choices for now. Pick one regulated app, borrow a sum that fits, repay it on time, and your next loan will cost less than this one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Approval at 550 is uncommon with most app lenders, so it helps to go in with honest expectations. The few that do approve usually offer small amounts at a high cost. Before chasing the best loan app for low CIBIL score at this level, look at secured options or a co-applicant first. Repairing your report before you apply often opens more doors than any single app. For borrowers at this band, a small, carefully chosen loan beats several rejections.
