ICICI Loan Settlement: When It Applies and What to Expect
ICICI Bank may agree to accept a reduced amount to resolve eligible outstanding unsecured loan or credit card dues. Approval depends on the bank’s assessment and applicable policy. If a settlement is accepted, the account may be reported as “Settled” rather than “Closed”, depending on the account and reporting circumstances.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
ICICI loan settlement means ICICI Bank accepts a reduced lump sum as final payment on an unsecured loan.
ICICI decides under its own board-approved policy, and it can say no.
Check which ICICI entity holds your loan: ICICI Bank, or a subsidiary such as ICICI Home Finance.
Get the offer in writing before you pay, and collect the settlement letter and NOC afterwards.
The loan shows as “Settled” on your credit report, for up to 7 years.
What Is ICICI Loan Settlement, and Which ICICI Loans Does It Cover?
Settlement is not something a borrower chooses out of preference. ICICI considers it only when you genuinely cannot repay in full. ICICI’s settlement policy is not public, so this page does not quote any ICICI waiver, timeline or threshold.
First, which ICICI do you owe?
Who you owe | What it covers | What to know |
ICICI Bank | Personal loans, credit cards and other unsecured credit | The subject of this page |
ICICI Home Finance Company | Home loans and loans against property | A subsidiary of ICICI Bank and a separate company. It follows its own process. These are secured loans, which FREED does not handle |
Read the company name on your loan statement before you do anything else.
A settlement means the bank accepts less than the full dues as full and final payment, and the account is reported as “Settled”. For a closer look at personal loans, read our guide to ICICI Bank personal loan settlement. For card dues, see ICICI Bank credit card settlement.
FREED’s Loan Settlement Plan covers unsecured loans only.
When Does ICICI Consider a Loan Settlement?
ICICI considers settlement when full repayment is genuinely not possible. A bank may consider settlement when a borrower is experiencing sustained repayment difficulty. NPA classification follows the applicable regulatory rules and depends on the account and facility type; it should not be treated as an automatic settlement threshold.
ICICI does not publish a threshold, a timeline or a waiver. So any page that quotes one is guessing. We will not guess.
Here is a rule that applies to every regulated bank. Applicable RBI directions set requirements for regulated entities’ compromise settlement policies and approval processes. Verify the current directions and the precise approval wording before publication. That is why the person on the phone usually cannot promise you an outcome.
One more thing, and it clears up a common myth. The framework lets a bank settle. It does not give you a right to a settlement. [LEGAL FLAG - reviewing team to verify before publish]
Before settlement, ask ICICI about a lower EMI or a longer repayment time, a payment pause, or restructuring. Read our guides on ICICI loan restructuring and ICICI restructuring. And to see how banks classify overdue loans, read about NPA accounts.
What Should You Expect When You Approach ICICI?
ICICI sets its own process. These steps are the general path.
Get a written outstanding statement.
It should split principal, interest and penal charges.Contact ICICI’s collections or recovery team.
Ask in writing how to request a one-time settlement.Submit a hardship request with your papers.
Keep it short, factual and dated.Wait for a written offer.
It may be a counter-offer. Respond calmly. A FREED counsellor can help you prepare.Check the letter before you pay.
It should show your name, loan account number, agreed amount, deadline, and a clear statement that the dues are cleared and the account will be reported as “Settled”.Pay by a traceable channel.
Never cash. Never a personal account.Collect the settlement letter and the NOC (no objection certificate, the bank’s proof that nothing more is due) in writing.
What to expect: a written process, and possibly a counter-offer. What not to expect: a published waiver, a fixed timeline or a guarantee. Recovery calls may also continue while you talk.
Check the applicable RBI directions and the bank’s written terms before agreeing to instalments. The regulatory treatment of a compromise settlement depends on the applicable conditions, so do not assume that every payment schedule exceeding three months is automatically treated the same way.

Check your optionsWhat Documents Will ICICI Ask For?
ICICI has no published fixed list. These are the papers most banks ask for.
Document | Why ICICI asks for it | Where to get it |
Loan or card statement showing principal, interest and penal charges | To agree what is actually owed | From the app or internet banking, or on written request |
Loan account or card number | To find your account | Your statement or loan agreement |
ID and address proof | To confirm who you are | Your own records |
3 to 6 months of bank statements | To show the drop in income | Your bank |
Hardship proof, such as a job-loss or salary-cut letter, medical bills or business closure papers | To show why you cannot pay in full | Employer, hospital or business records |
Income proof, such as salary slips or ITR | To show what you can pay now | Employer or income tax records |
Any notices received from ICICI | To show where the account stands | Your own folder |

Requirements vary by case. So ask ICICI in writing what it needs, and keep copies of everything you send. Pay by a traceable channel into your own loan account only. Never use cash, and never pay a personal account.

Freed Expert Tip
Check that the offer clearly states what payment is required, when the settlement becomes effective, what obligations it covers, and how the account will be reported. Review your credit report afterwards and dispute any inaccuracies through the appropriate process.
Talk to a FREED counsellorWhat Does ICICI Loan Settlement Do to Your Credit Report?
The account shows “Settled”, not “Closed”. The mark can stay up to 7 years. A settlement can negatively affect your credit profile, but the size of any score change varies according to your credit history and the information in your credit report. Avoid relying on a fixed point-drop estimate. The waived part appears in the written-off amount field.
Here is what readers rarely get. Banks send updates to credit bureaus on set dates each month. Since 1 July 2026 those are the 9th, 16th, 23rd and the last day. A wrong entry must be resolved within 30 days of your complaint. Beyond that, RBI’s rules provide ₹100 a day in compensation.
Can “Settled” later change to “Closed”? Only if the bank confirms it. Be careful with any page or person that promises a set number of days.
After settlement:
Check your credit report after a few weeks.
Dispute errors, using the NOC as proof.
Keep your other accounts current.
Borrow carefully.
You can see how your accounts look with Credit Insights, which reads your credit report in one place. Tracking your credit report and following up on the NOC are your responsibility. Nobody can promise a recovery date.

What If ICICI Does Not Respond or Reports It Wrongly?
Start inside the bank. The levels usually run from first-level customer service, to the grievance or nodal officer, to the Principal Nodal Officer. The levels and contact details change, so copy them from ICICI’s official grievance page on the day you write. We do not print phone numbers or emails here.
Then there is the RBI route. ICICI’s own digital lending page says you can escalate to the RBI if a complaint is partly or wholly rejected, you are not satisfied with the reply, or there is no reply within 30 days of the bank receiving it. You can complain online on the RBI’s Complaint Management System at cms.rbi.org.in. You can also post it to the RBI’s Centralised Receipt and Processing Centre in Chandigarh.
The RBI looks at your complaint. It does not order a settlement.
On recovery calls: if calls or visits turn abusive or threatening, you can document and report them. FREED Shield is open to anyone for that purpose. Read the RBI guidelines for recovery agents and our guide to filing a complaint against recovery agents.
Should You Settle With ICICI or Choose Another Route?
Take the options in order. They are not equals.
First, ask ICICI for a lower EMI, a longer repayment time, a short pause or restructuring. If you carry a large credit card balance, ask whether it can be converted into a structured loan. Check the cost first, because this is a bank product and terms vary.
If you are still paying every EMI, a consolidation plan may help. A new loan from a lending partner pays off your existing unsecured loans and card dues. Depending on eligibility, a debt consolidation loan may replace several repayments with one EMI. Applying for and taking out new credit can affect your credit profile, and the outcome depends on the lender’s checks, the accounts involved and your repayment behaviour. FREED’s Loan Consolidation Plan charges zero fee and needs a CIBIL score of 700 or above. Read about ICICI’s own consolidation loan and compare a personal loan with debt consolidation.
Settlement is for borrowers who genuinely cannot repay in full. Before you take any new loan, check affordability with the EMI Score.
Option | Who it suits | What you pay | Effect on credit report |
Lower EMI, longer repayment or a pause | Still paying, but stretched | Possibly more interest over time | Depends on how the bank records it |
Card balance converted to a loan | A large card balance, still paying | The new loan’s cost, which varies | Depends on the bank |
Consolidation | Several loans, still paying | The new loan’s EMI | Improves with on-time payments |
Settlement | Genuinely cannot pay in full | The settlement amount, plus any adviser’s fees | Shows as “Settled” |

How Does FREED Help With ICICI Loan Settlement?
The FREED Loan Settlement Plan (also called the Debt Resolution Program or “Settle My Loans”) helps borrowers move from financial distress to a structured path toward resolving their debt and rebuilding their financial future.
Here is how it works. FREED reviews your full financial picture and builds a personalised plan. You save a fixed monthly amount into a Special Purpose Account (SPA), held by an independent trusteeship company. Under the programme’s written terms, FREED may assist with negotiations and documentation. The lender decides whether to accept a proposal, and borrowers should understand and approve the relevant settlement terms before any payment is made.
FREED covers unsecured loans only. It does not handle home loans, car loans or gold loans.
On fees: an evaluation fee applies, and it is non-refundable. A separate success-based fee applies only when a settlement is completed. Banks may reduce dues by up to 50%*.
