One Time Settlement Scheme
One time settlement scheme Central Bank of India is not one fixed offer. The bank can settle a loan you cannot repay for less than the full amount, under its own board-approved policy. Some schemes run only for set dates and loan types. The bank decides. You cannot demand a settlement.

Key Summary
One time settlement scheme Central Bank of India is not one fixed offer. The bank decides case by case.
A special scheme for small business borrowers ran only until 31 March 2024.
RBI says settlement is not a borrower's right, and a bank's board-approved policy governs it.
A settlement paid over more than 3 months is treated as restructuring.
The settling bank must wait at least 12 months before giving you fresh credit (non-farm credit).
What Is the One Time Settlement Scheme at Central Bank of India?
Settlement is not something a borrower chooses out of preference. Banks and financial companies only consider it when you are in a genuine financial difficulty and are truly unable to repay the full amount.
The one time settlement scheme Central Bank of India borrowers search for is not 1 fixed offer. OTS (one time settlement, meaning you pay once and the matter ends) works in 3 layers:
The bank has a board-approved policy for settling loans for less. This is the base layer, and it applies case by case.
Some banks also run time-bound schemes for set loan types and dates. A scheme can open and shut within a short window.
Central Bank of India's special scheme for small business borrowers ended on 31 March 2024. [LEGAL FLAG: re-verify on the publish date, and state whether any retail scheme is currently open.]
The bank's website also lists an e-OTS option under its online services. Whether it covers your account depends on your loan, so confirm eligibility with the bank. Do not assume it applies to you.
For many loans, an account may be classified as a non-performing asset (NPA) when the amount due remains overdue for more than 90 days, subject to the applicable RBI asset-classification rules.
None of this tells you what your own offer will be. It only tells you where to ask. Next, why borrowers go looking for a settlement at all.
FREED Expert Tip
Ask the bank in writing which settlement policy applies to your loan. Schemes with end dates may no longer be open.
Learn How Settlement WorksWhy Do Borrowers Look for a Settlement With Central Bank of India?
Your EMIs have already started to slip. One or two went unpaid in the last few months. Then the calls and letters began.
How does it get here? A job loss. A medical emergency. A business slowdown. A pension or income that no longer covers the EMI. These things rarely come with a warning.
The difficulty is real, and most of it sits outside your control. You did not choose it. Nobody reading this page chose to be unable to pay.
Here is a fair way to see it. One missed EMI does not lead straight to a settlement. Many banks first discuss softer steps, such as a new schedule or a short break. Settlement comes up only when repaying in full has become genuinely impossible.
You may also see a tag on your account that frightens you. A loan marked as a bad loan is a bank's classification. It is not a verdict on you as a person.
So the useful question is not "how fast can I settle?" It is "what does my bank's policy say, and what do RBI's rules require?" The next sections answer both.
When Does Central Bank of India Consider a Settlement?
Banks look at settlement in a narrow set of cases. Here is how to tell if yours fits.
Banks tend to consider settlement when:
Repayment has become genuinely impossible. This is the starting point. A bank will not look at settlement for someone who can still pay.
The account is already overdue or marked as a bad loan. The account status is part of what the bank reviews.
You can show your difficulty with papers. Income records, expense records and proof of the event help the bank understand your case.
You can pay the agreed amount in one go. The Directions treat long payment plans differently, as the table below shows.
It is not meant for you if:
You are still managing your EMIs, even with effort. An EMI change or consolidation fits you better, and keeps your record cleaner.
You want settlement because it looks cheaper. Settlement is not a shortcut, and it carries real effects on your record.
You are hoping to wait for a better deal. Banks do not reward delay, and the effects on your record grow with it.
1 more factual point. Some banks run schemes for a fixed period. So ask whether any scheme is open right now before you assume one is.
Here is how RBI tags overdue accounts. SMA means special mention account. SMA-0 is up to 30 days overdue, SMA-1 is 31 to 60 days, and SMA-2 is 61 to 90 days. These stages describe when banks start paying attention. They are not a tip. Read more about SMA on your report.
Check how heavy your load is with EMI Score. If EMIs take more than 50% of your take-home salary, the month gets tight, and softer options deserve a look first.
How Does One Time Settlement Work at Central Bank of India, Step by Step?
Banks only consider settlement when repayment has genuinely become impossible. It is never a choice made out of preference, and the steps below are the general method.
Write Down What You Owe
List principal, interest and charges for each loan separately. Settlement talks start from the real numbers.Check Your Account Status
Find out whether the account is overdue or marked as a bad loan. Banks look at settlement only for genuine inability to pay.Ask the Bank Which Route Applies
Ask the branch or the recovery team whether a scheme is open for your loan. Also ask whether the e-OTS option on the bank's website covers your account, and do not assume it does.Send a Written Request With Proof
Explain your difficulty and attach income, expense and difficulty papers. A written request creates a record.Hold the Offer Before You Pay
The offer must state the amount, deadline and "full and final". Never pay before you hold it in writing.Pay by the Deadline
Pay through the bank's official channel and keep every receipt. A late payment can cancel the offer.Collect the Settlement Letter
Ask for the settlement letter and check that your credit report shows "Settled". It is your proof that the matter ended.
This takes time. A bank may take weeks to respond at each stage, and nothing here is quick. Be wary of anyone who says otherwise.
Each step follows a rule in RBI's Directions. The next section sets them out one by one.
What the Law Says
RBI says a bank may settle for less, but a borrower has no right to it. The bank decides under its own policy.
Talk Through My Settlement OptionsWhat Do RBI's Rules Mean for Your Settlement With Central Bank of India?
These rules bind the bank. They are not a checklist the borrower can enforce, but they explain what to expect.
Central Bank of India is a nationalised commercial bank, so RBI's commercial banks Directions apply to it. They were updated as on 1 October 2026. Read the last column first, since it shows what each rule means for you.
What the Directions Say, in Plain Words
Rule | What it says | What it means for you |
Board-approved policy (para 12) | Every bank must have a written policy covering process, minimum ageing and permissible sacrifice | You can ask which policy applies to your loan |
Not a right (para 88) | Settlement is at the bank's discretion, on commercial judgement | A bank can say no |
Who approves (para 12) | Approval sits one level above whoever sanctioned the loan, and the official who sanctioned it cannot approve | A settlement is a considered decision, not a branch favour |
Time limit (paras 90, 91) | Paying over more than 3 months, or part settlement, is treated as restructuring | Expect a lump sum within a short window |
Cooling period (para 96) | The settling bank must wait at least 12 months before fresh credit (non-farm credit) | Plan your borrowing |
Court cases (para 101) | If a recovery case is pending, the settlement needs a consent decree | The court may need to approve it |
Lok Adalat (para 102) | Banks are encouraged to use Lok Adalats for recovery of personal loans, credit card loans or housing loans below ₹10 lakh | You may be offered this route |
Technical write-off (para 92) | A bank can write a loan off in its books without waiving your debt | A write-off in the bank's books does not erase what you owe |
In practice, the Directions shape the conversation, but they do not decide it. The bank still decides whether to settle, and on what terms. Use the table to know what is normal, not to demand an outcome.
What Are Your Options Before and Besides Settlement?
The order matters. Softer options come first, and settlement comes last. They are never equal choices for the same person.
The table puts 4 routes side by side. Read the "Effect on your credit record" column first, since that is where the real difference shows.
Four Routes, From Softer to Last
Route | Who it is for | Effect on your credit record | What to check | Who arranges it |
Ask your bank for an EMI change | 1 loan that feels heavy while you can still pay | Usually the lightest effect, if payments stay on time | Whether total interest rises with a longer tenure | You ask your bank |
Card balance transfer | 1 expensive card balance you can clear soon | A new account opens and an enquiry may appear | Fee, GST, offer window and the rate after it | You apply to the new bank |
People who can still repay but are stretched across several dues | Credit score starts to improve | Eligibility and final terms depend on the lending partner's assessment | FREED matches you to a lending partner, who disburses the loan | |
Only people genuinely unable to repay in full | A "Settled" mark can stay up to 7 years. Waiver up to 50%* | The bank decides the terms | FREED negotiates with the bank on your behalf |
Rates and ranges shown are indicative. Final terms decided by the bank. FREED is not a Loan Provider. No outcome is guaranteed. Please verify directly with your bank.
Up to 50% is a ceiling, not a promise.
In practice, each row suits a different person. If you can still pay, the first 3 rows come first. The 4th is for people who cannot repay in full, and it comes last.
Start by asking for an EMI change, such as a new schedule or a short break. A balance transfer credit card suits 1 expensive balance. Debt consolidation suits people who can still repay but are stretched thin across several dues.
How FREED Helps If You Are Unable to Repay Your Loans?
Helps borrowers move from financial distress to a structured path toward resolving their debt and rebuilding their financial future.
First, the framing. This is for people who cannot repay in full. It is not a smart move or a shortcut, and banks only consider it when repayment has become genuinely impossible.
Here is the process, in order:
FREED assesses your full picture: loans, income, expenses and repayment capacity.
A personalised plan is built around it.
You save a fixed amount each month into a Special Purpose Account (SPA) in your own name. An independent trustee holds it, not FREED.
Once the savings are enough, FREED negotiates with the bank on your behalf.
The bank decides the terms. You accept or decline each offer, and no money is released without your authorisation.
After payment, you receive a settlement letter from the bank.
This takes time. Savings build first, and negotiation follows. Nothing here is quick.
FREED charges only on a completed settlement. If a bank refuses to settle, FREED does not charge the service fee and refunds the initial evaluation fee.
FREED covers unsecured debt only: credit cards, personal loans, BNPL (buy now pay later) and loan apps. It does not handle home, car or gold loans.
The waiver is up to 50%*. The bank decides the final figure, and no outcome is guaranteed. More than 20,000 accounts have been settled, and 20,00,000+ customers have been counselled. You can read how FREED's Debt Resolution Program works in full.
Rates and ranges shown are indicative. Final terms decided by the bank. FREED is not a Loan Provider. No outcome is guaranteed. Please verify directly with your bank.

What Helps During a Settlement With Central Bank of India?
A few habits protect you through the process. These 6 tips take little time.
Get the offer in writing before you pay. A verbal figure can change, and a written one is your proof.
Pay only through the bank's official channel and into the bank's account. This protects you from anyone posing as the bank.
Keep every receipt and the settlement letter. They prove what was paid and that the matter ended.
Never sign blank papers or hand over blank cheques. A blank page can be filled in later with terms you never agreed to.
Be careful with anyone who promises approval or asks for a fee before any work is done. A promise of approval is empty, since only the bank decides.
Check your credit report after the update. It shows whether the account appears as you were told. You can check your credit report in a few minutes.
1 calm line on recovery conduct. If an agent crosses the line, note the date and details. FREED Shield is a self-service tool to report recovery harassment with evidence. It is not legal representation. To know where the lines are, read your rights when agents contact you.
If the bank rejects your request, ask for the reason in writing. Then use the bank's grievance route and RBI's complaint portal.
