L&T Finance EMI Moratorium: How to Request and What It Costs

L&T Finance EMI moratorium is a pause on your EMIs that the company agrees to on a case-by-case basis. It helps this month and costs more later, because interest keeps running while you pause. A pause that changes your loan terms is a form of restructuring, and your credit report can show it.

Key Summary

  • L&T Finance EMI moratorium: ask in writing, and treat the pause as borrowed time, not free relief.

  • Interest keeps running during the pause, so you repay more in total.

  • Consider an illustrative outstanding loan balance of ₹3,00,000, with 36 months remaining and an annual interest rate of 18%. A three-month repayment pause would allow interest to accumulate during the pause. The additional repayment cost would depend on whether the lender increases subsequent EMIs, extends the tenure, or adopts another repayment arrangement. Any estimated cost should be calculated using a clearly stated repayment schedule and interest-calculation method.

  • A pause that changes loan terms can be a restructuring under RBI rules, and it can show on your report.

  • Use L&T Finance’s own channels. If refused, escalate to its grievance officer, then RBI’s portal.

  • Several loans or cards may need one fix, not one pause per loan.

What Is an L&T Finance EMI Moratorium, Really?

Quick answer: L&T Finance EMI moratorium is a pause on your EMIs that the company agrees to on a case-by-case basis. It helps this month and costs more later, because interest keeps running while you pause. A pause that changes your loan terms is a form of restructuring, and your credit report can show it.

Borrowers facing temporary financial difficulties may request a repayment pause or revised repayment schedule from L&T Finance. However, approval is discretionary and depends on the lender's policies, loan type, and individual circumstances. Borrowers should confirm whether such relief is currently available before applying. The EMIs do not disappear. They move to later, and the cost of waiting is added to your loan. That is why it helps to think of a pause as borrowed time.

Three plain facts sit under everything else on this page:

  • The company agrees to it case by case. It is not automatic, and asking does not guarantee a yes.

  • Interest keeps running while the EMIs are paused. The balance you owe grows each month of the pause.

  • The loan can end up longer, or the EMI can rise, afterwards. One of the two has to give, so that the extra interest is repaid.

The nationwide scheme from 2020 has ended. Today’s pause is an individual request to a non-bank finance company (an NBFC, which is a lender that is not a bank). L&T Finance is one. For the rules and who can apply, see our page on L&T Finance EMI moratorium rules and eligibility.

Lenders use a few words in different ways, so it helps to keep them apart.

Word you will hear

What it usually means

What to ask

Moratorium

A pause on EMIs for a set number of months

How long, and how is the extra interest added?

Rescheduling

New payment dates or a longer tenure on the same loan

What is the new EMI and end date?

Restructuring

A formal change to loan terms because of financial difficulty

How will it be reported on my credit record?

Lenders may use these words loosely. RBI’s rules decide when a change counts as restructuring, so ask which one applies to you.

Here is how a pause plays out. Say your EMI is due on the 5th of each month. You get a 3-month pause for the 5th of March, April, and May. Your next EMI falls on the 5th of June. During those three months, interest still builds on the loan. Nothing was wiped. It was moved.

Expert Tip

Ask L&T Finance to confirm in writing how the pause will be reported and how the extra interest is added.

Check My Options

Why Do Borrowers Ask L&T Finance for an EMI Pause?

Say your pay arrives late one month, or stops for a while. The EMI date does not care. It arrives on the 5th anyway, and the money is not there yet.

That is the usual start. Income dips, and the EMI keeps its date. Here are some situations that bring people to this point:

  • A pay delay. Your employer is late, or a client has not paid you yet.

  • A job gap. You are between jobs, and the next pay is a few weeks away.

  • A medical bill. A hospital stay takes the money that was meant for the EMI.

  • A slow month in a business. Sales dip, and the shop still has its own bills.

  • A family emergency. A sudden cost lands, and the budget breaks for a while.

None of these means you did something wrong. Asking for a pause is a sensible step, not a failure. Most people who ask were paying on time before the difficulty began.

It also helps to ask before an EMI is missed. A request made on time usually reads better than one that follows a bounced payment. If you have already missed one, you are not out of options. Read about what to do when a loan becomes overdue.

How long the dip lasts matters a great deal for what fits. This is a rough guide, not a rule.

How long the dip may last

What may fit

A few weeks, with income due back on a known date

A short pause may be enough

A few months, with the end not certain

A revised schedule may fit better

No clear end in sight

You may need more than a pause

Be honest with yourself on this point. A pause is a bridge over a short gap. If the gap is longer, a bridge only moves the problem further down the road.

Check how much of your income your EMIs take

The EMI Score takes about a minute.

Who Is a Moratorium Right For, and Who Needs More?

A pause suits some situations well and others poorly. Check which side you are on before you ask.

A pause tends to fit when

  • Your income has stopped or dipped for a short, known period. A pause covers a gap. It does not cover a lasting drop in pay.

  • You expect to pay the revised EMI once income returns. The EMI after a pause is usually higher, or the loan runs longer, so you need room for that.

  • Your payments before the difficulty were steady. A clean record makes a request easier to consider.

  • You can ask before the account slips far. An early request is easier to handle than a late one.

You may need more than a pause when

  • EMIs were already above 50% of take-home salary before the dip. A pause does not fix a load that was too heavy to begin with.

  • You carry three or more loans or cards. Pausing one will not fix the rest, and each one still wants its EMI.

  • Recovery calls have started. That usually means a pause request alone is not enough.

  • A pause request was already turned down. You may need another route.

Here is how to check your own EMI load. Say your take-home pay is ₹50,000.

Your loans

Total EMIs

Share of take-home pay

This loan only (₹10,846)

₹10,846

About 21.7%

Plus a ₹9,000 EMI

₹19,846

About 39.7%

Plus a ₹6,500 card EMI

₹26,346

About 52.7%

At about 53%, you are above the 50% mark. A pause on one loan frees ₹10,846 for a while, but the other two EMIs still take about ₹15,500. When the pause ends, the load returns, and it is a bit heavier. You can check yours with EMI Score.

When an account stays unpaid, lenders and credit bureaus tag it in stages as it slips. The first tags are called SMA (special mention account, an early warning mark). The page on SMA in CIBIL explains each stage.

How to Request an L&T Finance EMI Moratorium, Step by Step

The request is the easy part. Clear wording makes it easier to approve. Here are the seven steps.

A short request letter does not need a template. It needs five things:

  • The loan account number and loan type

  • One sentence on the reason, and when it began

  • The proof attached, such as a salary slip, bank statement or hospital bill

  • The relief you are asking for, and the date you will resume paying

  • Your contact details

Copy the company’s contact details from its own website, and not from third-party pages. Contact points change, and a wrong address can cost you days.

Proof makes a request easier to consider. Here is what to attach, depending on the reason.

Reason

What to attach

Pay delay

A salary slip, an employer note, or a bank statement showing the gap

Job gap

A relieving or termination letter, and a bank statement

Medical bill

The hospital bill or discharge summary

Slow business month

Recent bank statements and a short note on sales

Family emergency

Whatever document shows the event, where one exists

When the decision comes in writing, check each point before you say yes.

Check

Why it matters

Length of the pause

It sets how many EMIs you skip

The date EMIs resume

You need to know the first payment date

The new EMI or the new end date

One of these changes

How the extra interest is added

It decides your total cost

How the account will be reported

It decides what shows on your record

If anything is missing, ask for it before you accept. A verbal reply is not approval. Read about what happens when an EMI bounces in case a payment slips while you wait. For the difference between the two kinds of change, see rescheduling and restructuring.

If the request is refused, do not stop there. Ask for the reason in writing. Then use the company’s grievance route, in order: its grievance officer, then the Principal Nodal Officer, then RBI’s complaint portal if you are still not satisfied.

Next comes what the pause costs.

Steps, in order

  1. 1

Decide What You Are Asking For

Ask for a pause of a set number of months, or a revised schedule. A clear ask is easier to route.

  2. 2

Find Your Loan Type and Number

Note whether it is a personal loan or a secured loan such as a two-wheeler. Relief differs by loan type.

  3. 3

    Write a Short Request

Say what changed, for how long, and how you will resume paying. A clear request is easier to approve.

  4. 4

Send It Through L&T Finance’s Own Channels

Use customer care, the branch, or the self-service options on its website. Keep proof that you sent it.

  5. 5

Keep Paying Until You Have It in Writing

Do not stop EMIs because you applied. A gap without approval can be reported as a missed payment.

  6. 6

    Read the Written Decision

Check the pause length, the new EMI or tenure, and how the extra interest is added. Ask questions before you accept.

  7. 7

If the Answer Is No, Escalate

Ask for the reason in writing, then go to the grievance officer. After that comes the Principal Nodal Officer, and then RBI’s complaint portal.

What Does an L&T Finance EMI Moratorium Cost You Later?

The cost is real, and it can be worked out ahead of time. Interest keeps running every month of the pause.

Here is a hypothetical example. It is illustrative, and the 18% is only an example, not an L&T Finance rate. Say you owe ₹3,00,000 on a personal loan, with 36 months left. At 18% a year, the EMI is about ₹10,846. You get a 3-month pause. Interest still builds, so the balance grows to about ₹3,13,700 by the time EMIs restart. That is about ₹13,700 of extra interest.

Afterwards, one of two things has to give.

After a 3-month pause

EMI

Time left

Extra cost vs no pause

Option A: same 36 months

About ₹11,341

36 months

About ₹17,800

Option B: same EMI

About ₹10,846

About 38 months

About ₹24,000

A higher EMI costs less overall than a longer loan. Both cost more than not pausing. Option A asks for about ₹495 more every month. Option B keeps the EMI but adds about two more months at the end.

The cash you keep is real too. Three EMIs not paid is about ₹32,500. So the choice is whether that relief is worth the extra interest. For every ₹1 of EMI you skip, about 55 to 74 paise comes back later in this example.

The length of the pause changes the bill. Here are three lengths on the same loan.

Illustrative. Interest is added monthly at the example rate of 18% a year.

Pause length

Balance when EMIs restart

Option A: new EMI and extra cost

Option B: time left and extra cost

Cash kept during the pause

1 month

About ₹3,04,500

About ₹11,008, extra about ₹5,860

About 37 months, extra about ₹7,800

About ₹10,850

3 months

About ₹3,13,700

About ₹11,341, extra about ₹17,800

About 38 months, extra about ₹24,000

About ₹32,500

6 months

About ₹3,28,000

About ₹11,859, extra about ₹36,500

About 41 months, extra about ₹50,000

About ₹65,100

Each month of pause adds about ₹4,500 of interest at this example rate. The first month costs about ₹5,860 to ₹7,800 later. The sixth month on top of three costs more than the first three did. That is because interest is added on interest that has already built up.

Here is a question worth asking the lender. Can you pay the interest during the pause? Say you pay ₹4,500 a month for 3 months. The balance stays at ₹3,00,000. Your EMI goes back to ₹10,846 for the same 36 months. You pay about ₹13,500 extra in all, and you keep about ₹19,000 of cash over the three months. The lender decides whether this is allowed, so ask for it.

How the extra interest is added is the lender’s call. It may be added to the balance, spread over the remaining EMIs, or added to the tenure. Ask for the revised schedule in writing, and check the figures against an EMI calculator.

What Are Your Options Besides a Moratorium?

The options below run from softest to last. They are not equal choices for the same person. Look at the earlier rows first, and move down only if the earlier ones do not fit.

A pause delays the problem. A lower EMI over a longer time spreads it. Consolidation addresses several dues at once. Each depends on your situation.

Up to 50% is a ceiling, not a promise.

Here is a closer look at the second row. Say you stretch the same ₹3,00,000 loan from 36 to 48 months, with no pause. The EMI falls from about ₹10,846 to about ₹8,813. That frees about ₹2,033 a month. In return, you pay about ₹32,600 more in total. It is an honest trade. A lower EMI is easier on the budget, and it costs more over time.

A balance transfer can help if one loan carries a high rate. Read how a personal loan balance transfer works. It does not help much when the problem is cash flow across several loans.

That is where consolidation comes in. Read how debt consolidation works. It applies to unsecured debts such as personal loans and cards. It does not apply to secured loans like a two-wheeler or home loan.

The last row is for a specific, difficult situation, and it is not a shortcut. The consequences are real. Read about the FREED Debt Resolution Program before you decide, and look at the earlier rows first.

How FREED Helps If One Pause Will Not Fix Your EMIs

FREED’s Loan Consolidation Plan is for people who can still repay but need a smarter way to manage their debt.

A pause or restructuring is something only the lender can grant. FREED does not grant one. What FREED does is different. It gets a consolidation done for you.

Here is how it works:

  • FREED assesses your profile. You share your loans, cards, and income. FREED checks what you owe and what you can pay each month.

  • FREED matches you to a lending partner. The match comes from FREED’s network, based on your profile.

  • The partner pays off your eligible dues at once. One new loan clears card dues, personal loans, BNPL (buy now pay later), and similar unsecured credit.

  • If approved, debt consolidation may combine eligible unsecured loans and credit card dues into one new loan with a single monthly repayment. The new EMI may be lower depending on the interest rate, tenure, and associated charges. A new loan application may temporarily affect your credit score, while consistent repayments may support improvement over time.

This applies only if your L&T Finance loan is an unsecured personal loan. Two-wheeler, tractor, and home loans are secured, and FREED does not handle secured loans.

Your credit score does not drop with consolidation. It starts to improve. The fee is success-based, and it is charged only when the consolidation is completed. FREED has counselled 20,00,000+ customers, and the process is online.

Say you hold the L&T Finance loan, two cards, and a small app loan. A pause on the L&T loan frees one EMI for a while, but the other three still need paying. Consolidation brings all four into one payment. To see how consolidation differs from a change in loan terms, read how consolidation and restructuring differ.

If you are unsure whether you qualify, FREED’s team can assess your situation in a free call and let you know what options are available. Eligibility and final terms depend on the lending partner’s assessment, and approval is not guaranteed. FREED is not a Loan Provider. You can read more about FREED’s Debt Consolidation Program.

What Helps While You Wait for L&T Finance’s Decision?

Waiting is the hard part. These six steps keep your position safe while the lender decides.

A word on calls. Recovery agents can contact you about dues, but there are limits to how they should behave. If an agent crosses the line, note the date, time and what was said. FREED Shield is a self-service tool to report recovery harassment with evidence. It is not legal representation. Read about FREED Shield and your rights when agents contact you.

If the numbers still feel tight after all this, the options section above covers another route.

Steps, in order

  1. 1

If you cannot pay the full EMI, contact L&T Finance before the due date and explain your repayment difficulty

Ask whether partial payments can be accepted and how they will be adjusted against your outstanding dues. Paying less than the required EMI without an approved arrangement may still result in overdue charges, delinquency reporting, and other consequences.

  2. 2

Keep every email, letter, and call note, with dates

If a question comes up later, a record settles it. Note the name of the person you spoke to.

  3. 3

Get the decision and the revised schedule in writing

A verbal reply is not approval. A written schedule shows the new EMI and the end date.

  4. 4

Do not take a new loan to cover EMIs without comparing the cost

A fresh loan adds a fee and a new EMI. It can leave you with a heavier load than a pause would.

  5. 5

Check how the pause will be reported before you accept it

The same pause can be reported in different ways. Ask which one applies to yours.

  6. 6

Check your credit report a month after the change

A small error is easier to fix when you catch it early. You can check your credit report to see how the account shows.
