Personal Loan Foreclosure Charges: How to Calculate Them
Personal loan foreclosure charges are fees a lender may levy when you repay the whole loan before the term ends. RBI bars them on floating rate non-business loans to individuals. For fixed rate loans, the lender’s own policy applies and must be shown in your sanction letter. Check that letter before you pay.

Key Summary
Personal loan foreclosure charges depend on your loan’s rate type and sanction date.
RBI bars charges on floating rate non-business loans to individuals.
Fixed rate loans follow the lender’s policy. Undisclosed charges cannot be levied.
The 2025 RBI rules cover loans sanctioned or renewed on or after January 1, 2026.
Foreclosure is full early repayment. Settlement is paying less than owed.
What Are Personal Loan Foreclosure Charges?
Personal loan foreclosure charges are a fee a lender may add when you pay off the whole loan early. Not every loan carries one. Whether yours does depends on the rate type, the sanction date and the lender’s policy.
On your statement, the fee may appear as “foreclosure charges”, “prepayment charges” or “closure charges”. They usually mean the same thing.
Three terms get mixed up, so here is how they differ:
| Term | What it means | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Foreclosure | Repaying the whole loan before the term ends | Someone with spare cash who wants to clear the loan |
| Part-prepayment | Paying some of the principal (the amount you owe) early | Someone with some spare cash who wants a lower balance |
| Settlement | Paying less than you owe, because you cannot pay in full | Someone in genuine difficulty |
Settlement is a different path. We cover it later in this guide.
Why does the fee exist? A loan earns the lender interest month after month. When you repay early, that income stops. Lenders say the charge covers that loss.
Whether that’s fair is another question. RBI now limits the fee in some cases, and we’ll look at those rules in a moment.
First, a closer look at the lender’s side.

Check My Loan Load → https://app.freed.careWhy Do Lenders Charge a Fee for Closing a Loan Early?
Think of a loan as a long contract. The lender plans on earning interest across every month of it. If you repay in month 12 of 36, two years of expected income disappears.
The fee is meant to soften that loss. It’s also a way to discourage borrowers from moving their loan elsewhere once rates drop.
For you, it can feel like a bad surprise. You did a sensible thing. You saved up and cleared a debt. Then a number shows up at the end, and it’s higher than you expected.
Two people show how the same words mean different things.
Priya got a bonus. She has some savings and wants to close one personal loan to cut her monthly EMIs. Her question is simple: does the fee cancel out the saving?
Ramesh has missed payments. He cannot clear the full amount, even with effort. For him, “closing the loan” is not a real option. His path is different, and we’ll come to it.
None of this is about blame. Lenders set fees under their own policies. Borrowers deserve to know them before they sign.
So how do you find out what your loan carries?
How Do You Know If Your Personal Loan Has Foreclosure Charges?
Six places and checks will tell you:
- The sanction letter and loan agreement. Both should state any pre-payment charge. This is the first place to look.
- The Key Fact Statement (KFS). This is a one-page summary of your rate, fees and charges. Check whether you received one.
- Your rate type. A floating rate moves with the market. A fixed rate stays the same. Many personal loans carry a fixed rate, so confirm yours.
- Your sanction date. Was the loan sanctioned before or after January 1, 2026? The date decides which RBI rules apply.
- The loan’s purpose. Was it for business or non-business use? RBI treats them differently.
- The lender’s foreclosure statement. It shows the exact amount for a given closing date. It is the number that counts.
Here is a plain rule from RBI. Under the RBI’s 2025 Directions, applicable pre-payment charges must be disclosed in the sanction letter and loan agreement, and in the Key Facts Statement where one is required. Charges not disclosed as specified in the Directions cannot be levied on loans covered by those rules. The same goes for the KFS, where one is required.
So if a lender asks for a fee you’ve never seen in writing, ask where it’s disclosed. Keep your reply.

Ask your lender for a written foreclosure statement before you pay. It shows the exact amount for your closing date.
See Consolidation OptionsWhat Does RBI Say About Foreclosure Charges on Personal Loans?
RBI’s 2025 Directions on pre-payment charges set the main rules. Here they are in five points:
- Who is covered. Commercial banks (payments banks excluded), co-operative banks, NBFCs (non-banking finance companies) and All India Financial Institutions.
- Floating rate, non-business loans to individuals. No pre-payment charges. This holds with or without a co-obligant (a joint borrower or guarantor).
- Part or full prepayment. The rule holds whatever the source of funds, with no minimum lock-in period.
- Everything else, including fixed rate loans. Charges, if any, follow the lender’s approved policy.
- Lender-initiated prepayment. No charge applies when the lender starts it.
Now the date rule. These Directions cover loans sanctioned or renewed on or after January 1, 2026. The RBI’s Pre-payment Charges on Loans Directions, 2025 apply to loans sanctioned or renewed on or after 1 January 2026. For older loans, check the RBI instructions applicable when the loan was sanctioned, along with the terms of your loan agreement. Do not assume that the new Directions automatically determine the treatment of every existing loan.
RBI’s earlier press release says banks and NBFCs may not levy foreclosure charges on floating rate term loans to individuals for non-business purposes. That fits the Directions above.
Be careful with one claim. RBI has not banned all foreclosure charges. Fixed rate loans can still carry them, under the lender’s policy.
We haven’t found a source on GST for these charges. Check your lender’s statement for the final figure.

Book My CallHow to Calculate Personal Loan Foreclosure Charges?
You can work out the charge in four steps:
- Find the outstanding principal. It is on your loan statement.
- Find the charge percentage. Look in your agreement or KFS.
- Multiply. Outstanding principal times the charge percentage.
- Add pending dues and compare. Add any overdue amount, then compare the total with your remaining EMIs.
Some lenders may add taxes. Ask for the final figure in writing.
Here is a worked example. It is illustrative only. The 14% rate and the charge percentages are assumptions, not a lender quote.
A borrower takes ₹5,00,000 for 36 months at an assumed 14% a year, with interest charged only on the unpaid amount. The EMI is ₹17,089. After 12 EMIs, the outstanding principal is ₹3,55,921. The remaining 24 EMIs would total ₹4,10,132.
| Assumed charge | Charge (before any taxes) | Amount to close the loan | Saved vs paying all EMIs |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0% | ₹0 | ₹3,55,921 | ₹54,211 |
| 2% | ₹7,118 | ₹3,63,039 | ₹47,093 |
| 4% | ₹14,237 | ₹3,70,158 | ₹39,974 |

Look at the 4% row. Even then, closing early still saves money here. That’s because the interest saved is larger than the charge. Under these assumptions, the estimated break-even foreclosure charge is approximately 15.2% of the outstanding principal, before any additional applicable costs. This figure is specific to the example. Your result may differ depending on your outstanding balance, remaining tenure, interest rate, charges and what else you could do with the money.
That won’t hold for every loan. If your rate is low or the charge is high, the maths can flip. The table also ignores what else you could do with that cash. Compare before you pay.

Is Foreclosing a Personal Loan Always the Right Move?
No. Start with the softest options.
You can keep paying, especially if the charge is high and your rate is low. You can make a part-prepayment, which lowers what you owe without clearing the loan. You can look at a balance transfer to a cheaper lender.
Now Priya, who is still paying but stretched across several EMIs. Closing one loan with a new loan may only move the debt around.
FREED’s Loan Consolidation Plan can combine eligible unsecured loans into one lower EMI through a lending partner. Your CIBIL score doesn’t drop, and it starts to improve. Check each old loan’s foreclosure charge first, because a charge on an old loan can reduce the saving. FREED can’t promise a charge is waived. The personal loan debt consolidation maths walks through the numbers.
Then Ramesh. If a borrower cannot repay the full outstanding amount, they may discuss available options with the lender. Settlement involves accepting less than the full amount owed and may have credit-reporting consequences. Whether a lender offers or approves settlement depends on the circumstances and its applicable policy. It means paying less than you owe, and it leaves a “Settled” tag on your report for up to 7 years.
| Option | Suits | Main cost | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep paying | Charge is high, rate is low | Full interest | Longer debt |
| Part-prepayment | Some spare cash | Possible charge on amount prepaid | Cash gets tied up |
| Foreclose | Spare cash, high interest rate | Possible charge | Cash drain |
| Loan Consolidation Plan | Still paying, many EMIs | Lending partner terms | Approval needed |
| Loan Settlement Plan | Cannot repay in full | “Settled” tag | Takes time; bank decides |
Read down the table. The top rows are the lightest options. The bottom rows are heavier. That is why they come in this order.
What Happens to Your CIBIL Score After Foreclosure?
After a full repayment, your report shows the account as closed with a zero balance. That is a good outcome. It’s also different from a settled account. “Closed” here means fully repaid. A settled account is never “closed.”
Four documents protect you afterwards:
- Foreclosure statement. It shows what you paid and when.
- Payment receipt. Keep proof of every rupee.
- Closure letter or NOC. An NOC (No Objection Certificate) is the lender’s written confirmation that nothing is due.
- A credit report check. Look for the correct status once the lender has reported it.
Check your credit report after the lender has processed and reported the closure. The timing can vary, so do not treat a particular number of days as a guaranteed update deadline unless the applicable reporting rule or lender guidance supports it. We haven’t given a score change here. It varies from person to person, and no one can promise a number.

If your report looks wrong, write to the lender first. If that doesn’t work, wait 30 days, then file within 90 days at cms.rbi.org.in under the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme. The toll-free number is 14448.
One last point. Post-closure CIBIL and NOC follow-up is the borrower’s job. FREED doesn’t handle it.

Book My Call → https://freed.care/contact-usHow Can FREED Help If Several Loans Are Weighing You Down?
First, what FREED doesn’t do. FREED does not arrange foreclosure and is not a Loan Provider. FREED covers unsecured loans only, not secured ones.
For borrowers like Priya, FREED’s Loan Consolidation Plan works in three steps:
- Share your loans on the FREED app.
- Get a plan. FREED assesses your profile and matches you to a lending partner from its network.
- Follow one EMI. The lending partner’s new loan pays off your existing eligible unsecured loans, which can include personal loans and credit cards.
If approved by a lending partner, consolidation may replace eligible existing loans with one repayment. Whether the new EMI is lower, and whether the arrangement reduces the overall cost, depends on the approved loan amount, interest rate, tenure and applicable fees. Compare the total repayment cost before proceeding.
Here’s the honest part. The old lenders set their own charges. The lending partner’s terms decide the result. FREED can’t promise any waiver.
What about borrowers who cannot repay at all? That is a separate path. The Loan Settlement Plan can bring waivers of up to 50%*, but the “Settled” tag and score impact apply. You can read about it on the Settle My Loans page.
When recovery conversations cross the line into abusive, threatening, or harassing behaviour, FREED provides an added layer of support through FREED Shield, a dedicated borrower-support service. FREED Shield helps you understand your rights as a borrower and can assist you in preparing and submitting a complaint through the appropriate channels where necessary.
FREED has settled 20,000+ accounts, counselled 20,00,000+ customers and managed ₹3,200 Cr+ in debt.

How Can You Keep Foreclosure Costs Low?
A few small checks can save a bigger surprise later:
- Read the agreement before you borrow. The charge is easiest to question before you sign.
- Ask whether the rate is fixed or floating. It decides which RBI rule applies.
- Ask for the Key Fact Statement. It lists charges in one place.
- Compare the charge with the interest you would save. Closing early only pays off if the saving is larger.
- Ask for a written foreclosure statement with the closing date. The figure changes by date.
- Pay by the date on the statement. A late payment can change the amount.
- Keep the closure letter and NOC. They are your proof the loan is done.
A small check now saves a bigger surprise later.
