ICICI Personal Loan Foreclosure: Charges and Steps

Foreclosure means paying off your whole ICICI personal loan before the last EMI date. You pay the outstanding principal, interest due, and any foreclosure charge, plus GST. The bank then closes the loan and issues a No Objection Certificate.

Key Summary

  • ICICI’s Service Charges page lists 3% on principal outstanding, and nil after 24 EMIs, with GST on top.

  • Other ICICI pages give different EMI cut-offs, so check your own agreement.

  • The foreclosure statement is issued only after 180 days from disbursement.

  • Part-prepayment is also allowed, from one EMI up to outstanding principal minus one EMI.

  • Closing early pays only when the interest saved is more than the fee.

ICICI Personal Loan Foreclosure Charges: What You Pay

Your bonus hit the account last week. The ICICI loan still has two years to run. Before you rush to pay it off, one question decides whether it makes sense: what will ICICI charge you to close early?

Start with ICICI’s own Service Charges page. It lists ICICI personal loan foreclosure charges as 3% on the principal outstanding. The principal outstanding is the part of the loan you still owe, without future interest. Once you have paid 24 EMIs, the page says the charge drops to nil. GST and other applicable levies are added on top, since the listed charges exclude them.

Now the honest part. ICICI’s own pages don’t all agree. One ICICI blog mentions 0% after 12 EMIs. An ICICI FAQ talks about charges of “typically 3 to 5%”, with a lock-in of 6 to 12 EMIs.

So which one is right for you? The agreement you signed. Bank pages give general guidance, but your loan papers set your actual terms. The Service Charges page also says the bank may levy or waive charges at its discretion, in line with RBI guidance.

Check these three papers before you plan anything:

  • Sanction letter. The approval letter you got when the loan was sanctioned.

  • Loan agreement. The full contract, with the foreclosure clause.

  • Key Facts Statement (KFS). The one-page summary of your loan’s cost and charges.

One small note: the same page has separate terms for business loans to registered micro and small enterprises. Those don’t apply to personal borrowers.

Should You Foreclose or Part-Prepay Your ICICI Loan?

Foreclose when the interest you would still pay is clearly more than the fee. That one rule settles most cases.

Here’s how it looks in rupees. Treat this as an illustration, not an ICICI quote. Assume ₹2,00,000 is still owed, the rate is 14% a year, and 24 months are left. Your EMI would be about ₹9,603. Across those 24 months, you’d pay about ₹30,462 more in interest.

Case A: before the nil cut-off (3%). ICICI personal loan foreclosure charges come to ₹6,000. Add GST of ₹1,080 and the total is ₹7,080. Subtract that from ₹30,462, and you save about ₹23,382.

Case B: after the nil cut-off. No charge applies. You save the full ₹30,462.

Fewer months left changes the result. The table keeps the same ₹2,00,000 and 14%, with GST at an assumed 18%:

Working: interest still to pay = (EMI × months left) minus ₹2,00,000. Fee = ₹2,00,000 × 3%, plus 18% GST. Rates and ranges shown are indicative. Final terms decided by the bank. FREED is not a Loan Provider. No outcome is guaranteed. Please verify directly with your bank.

At 6 months left, you barely gain. At 3 months, you lose money by closing early.

Don’t have the full amount? Part-prepayment may fit better. ICICI’s Service Charges page allows a minimum of one EMI and a maximum of the outstanding principal minus one EMI. For loans from 1 January 2026, it allows this any number of times in a financial year. The page puts the part-prepayment charge at 3% for loans up to 24 months old, and nil after that.

Whichever you pick, use money you can truly spare. An empty emergency fund often leads to a costlier loan later. For the maths, see how banks calculate EMI and the EMI formula banks use.

How to Foreclose an ICICI Personal Loan, Step by Step

ICICI’s pages describe a branch-led process. Here it is in order:

  1. Check your agreement. Find the fee and the EMI cut-off that apply to your loan. This tells you whether closing now costs 3% or nothing.

  2. Find the payable amount. ICICI’s blog lists three places to check: the iMobile app, customer care, or your loan statement. This gives you a rough figure before the formal statement.

  3. Request the foreclosure statement. ICICI says it is emailed within 3 days of your request. It is issued only after 180 days from disbursement.

  4. Read every line. Look at outstanding principal, interest, the foreclosure charge and GST. Fixing an error now is far easier than after payment.

  5. Pay at a loan-servicing branch. Take a signed request letter. ICICI’s pages list cash, cheque or demand draft as payment modes. Carry your PAN card if you pay more than ₹50,000 in cash.

  6. Submit the closure request. Once the full outstanding is paid, file the request at the branch or through customer care. Keep a copy or a reference number.

  7. Send someone else, if needed. Another person can do this for you with an authorisation letter and ID proof.

Can you foreclose online instead? ICICI’s pages describe the branch route, not an online one. For now, ask which payment modes your statement allows.

ICICI’s pages list customer care on 1800 1080.

One safety rule: pay only the way ICICI’s written statement says. Never share an OTP with anyone who calls.

RBI’s Prepayment Rules: When the Fee Is Not Allowed

New RBI rules can bring ICICI personal loan foreclosure charges down to zero, but only for certain loans. The details decide whether they apply to you.

RBI’s Pre-payment Charges on Loans Directions, 2025 cover loans sanctioned or renewed on or after 1 January 2026. A loan that started before then falls outside these rules. So if your ICICI loan began in 2025 or earlier, your agreement still decides the charge.

For loans the rules do cover, here’s the main protection:

  • Floating-rate loans to individuals, for non-business use: no prepayment charge at all. A floating rate can change during the loan. This holds no matter where your repayment money comes from, and there is no minimum lock-in.

  • Fixed-rate loans: charges follow the bank’s own approved policy. A fixed rate stays the same for the whole loan, and many personal loans work this way.

Your sanction letter or KFS will say which type you have.

Two more rules protect every covered borrower:

  • Disclosure. A prepayment charge must be written in your sanction letter, loan agreement, and KFS. If it is not disclosed there, the bank cannot levy it.

  • No charge after a waiver. If the bank waived a fee earlier, it cannot charge that fee later.

Quick self-check:

  1. When was the loan sanctioned, before or after 1 January 2026?

  2. Is the rate fixed or floating?

  3. Does the KFS clearly mention a foreclosure charge?

If your loan is post-2026, floating-rate, and for personal use, the fee should not apply. For everything else, your agreement and the bank’s policy decide.

ICICI’s FAQ says the NOC comes within 5 to 7 working days of final payment being confirmed. ICICI’s FAQ also suggests checking your credit report 30 to 45 days after you receive the NOC.

What should your report say? “Closed”. That status means you paid in full. It is different from “Settled”, which means the bank accepted less than you owed. Foreclosure is full payment, so your loan should never show as settled.

When the time comes, pull your report and find the ICICI loan. Credit Insights shows your score, what is affecting it, and steps you can take.

If the entry is wrong, act in this order. First, write to ICICI with your NOC and payment receipt. If the bank doesn’t fix it, raise a dispute with the credit bureau. Our guide on how to update your CIBIL score after loan closure covers each step.

To see how a clearance letter works when a loan is settled instead, read NOC after loan settlement. The contrast shows why the “Closed” status is worth protecting.

Make sure your report shows the loan as closed.

If You Cannot Afford to Foreclose, What Else Can You Do?

Sometimes the search for ICICI personal loan foreclosure charges isn’t about spare cash at all. The EMI is simply too heavy, and closing the loan feels like the only way out. It isn’t. There are other routes.

A cheaper loan through a balance transfer. You move the loan to another bank at a lower rate, which can cut your EMI or total interest. Since the ICICI loan still closes early, add its foreclosure charge to the maths. Read more on personal loan balance transfer at ICICI.

One EMI instead of many. Do the 50% check first. Say you take home ₹60,000 a month and your EMIs add up to ₹33,000. That’s 55% of your income, past the 50% line where most budgets start to break. FREED's Loan Consolidation Plan may help eligible borrowers combine multiple unsecured loans and credit card dues into a single loan, subject to lending partner approval. The monthly repayment depends on the approved interest rate, loan tenure and applicable charges. Applying for consolidation may affect your CIBIL score through credit enquiries and changes to your credit profile. Neither a lower EMI nor an improved credit score is guaranteed.” Our page on ICICI debt consolidation in plain language explains more.

Settlement, only as a last resort. Settlement is not something a borrower chooses out of preference. Banks consider it only when someone is in genuine financial difficulty and truly unable to repay. For those borrowers, FREED’s Loan Settlement Plan sets up a monthly savings plan, then negotiates with the bank. Savings can go up to 50%*, and the fee is success-based. It leaves a “Settled” mark on the report, which is why it comes last. See ICICI personal loan settlement steps and documents.

If recovery calls turn abusive, FREED Shield helps you report harassment and prepare a complaint. It is a self-service support tool, not legal representation.
