Key Summary

  • IDFC FIRST Bank says its FIRSTmoney personal loan has zero foreclosure charges.

  • You can foreclose in the bank’s app, step by step.

  • Check your own loan papers. Older or pre-approved loans may have different terms.

  • Ask for the closing amount first. It is date-specific and clears any overdue dues.

  • Download your no dues certificate and check your CIBIL report after a month.

What Is IDFC Personal Loan Foreclosure?

Good news first. IDFC FIRST Bank says it charges nothing to close its FIRSTmoney personal loan early. But read your own loan papers before you act.

Foreclosure (also called preclosure) means paying everything you still owe and closing the loan early. You don’t wait for the EMIs to run out. You clear the balance in one go.

It isn’t the same as a part payment. A part payment (paying only some of the balance while the loan continues) leaves the loan open. Foreclosure ends it.

When you foreclose, the bank works out your outstanding principal (the loan amount you have not repaid yet). It then adds interest up to the closing date and anything overdue.

People foreclose for fair reasons:

  • A bonus or some savings landed.

  • A better rate is available elsewhere.

  • The EMI feels like a weight they want gone.

All of these make sense. So the questions are simple. Can I do it on my phone, and what will it cost?

IDFC Personal Loan Foreclosure Charges: Is It Really Free?

Here’s the short answer. IDFC FIRST Bank’s own blogs (as of August 2026) say the FIRSTmoney personal loan has zero foreclosure charges and no lock-in period. The bank says the benefit applies from the day of disbursal.

That’s good news. But three honest points apply.

  • It’s the bank’s wording. The pages say terms apply “as of the day of publication.” They can change without notice.

  • It’s about one product. The claim speaks of the FIRSTmoney personal loan. Your loan may be different.

  • Your agreement decides. Your sanction letter and Key Fact Statement (KFS, the one-page cost summary from sanction) show what applies to you.

Other lenders in India usually charge a fee of about 2% to 5% of the outstanding principal for early closure. That’s a general industry range. It isn’t a claim about any one bank. So a “zero charge” offer is worth checking, and worth keeping in writing.

One more point. You must clear any overdue EMIs and late charges before the loan can close. A loan with dues showing can’t be closed.

How to Foreclose Your IDFC Personal Loan Online, Step by Step

Yes, you can start in the bank’s app. Here’s the path, as the bank describes it. Screens can change, so follow what the app shows.

  1. Check your loan papers. Open your sanction letter and KFS. Look for any foreclosure charge or waiting period on your loan.

  2. Clear any overdue amount. Pay missed EMIs and late charges first. The bank cannot close a loan with dues showing.

  3. Open the IDFC FIRST Bank app and tap Loans. Pick the loan account number you want to close.

  4. Tap the Foreclose option. The bank shows the closing amount for a date. Check it against your own loan balance.

  5. Pay the amount. Use the payment mode the app offers, or the QuickPay link (a payment link the bank sends) if you get one. Pay within the stated time.

  6. Download your no dues certificate (NOC). After the loan closes, find it in the app under Loans, then the closed loan. Save a copy.

  7. Check your CIBIL report after a month. Make sure the loan shows as closed.

Take screenshots of the closing amount and your payment receipt. They’re your proof if anything goes wrong.

Prefer a branch? The route is short. You fill out a foreclosure form, get the closing amount, and pay it. Ask for a written receipt there too.

For help with the letter itself, read the CIBIL clearance letter guide.

What Is the Closing Amount and What Does It Include?

The closing amount is the total you pay to close the loan. It has three parts:

  • Principal left. The part of the loan you haven’t repaid yet.

  • Interest up to the closing date. Interest runs daily, so the figure depends on the date.

  • Overdue amount and late charges. Any missed EMI and late fees must be added.

The amount is valid only for a date range. Pay within that time, or ask for a fresh figure. If you wait, interest adds up, and the number changes.

Where a foreclosure charge applies on a loan, GST at 18% sits on that fee, not on the loan. If there’s no fee, there’s no GST on it.

Here’s an example. It’s illustrative only. Your amounts depend on your loan and the date.

Look at the difference. The same loan costs ₹9,735 more if a charge applies. That’s why your own KFS matters. For the maths behind your EMI, read how banks calculate EMI.

What Does the RBI Say About Pre-payment Charges?

RBI’s 2025 Directions on pre-payment charges set clear rules. In plain words:

  • Banks can’t charge pre-payment fees on floating-rate, non-business loans to individuals sanctioned or renewed on or after January 1, 2026.

  • No charge applies when the bank itself asks you to prepay.

  • Any charge must be disclosed in the sanction letter and Key Fact Statement.

  • A charge not disclosed there can’t be levied.

An honest limit. These Directions don’t expressly end charges on fixed-rate loans. Most personal loans are fixed-rate. So for those, your loan agreement decides.

That’s why “check your papers” appears so often in this guide. The rule protects you, but only the document in your hand tells you what applies.

FREED Expert Tip

Take a screenshot of the closing amount and its date. Interest runs every day, so pay on or before that date.

Is It Worth Foreclosing Your IDFC Personal Loan Early?

It depends on your numbers. Here’s the one test. Is the interest you’ll save from now on bigger than any fee plus GST?

It tends to save money when

  • Many months of interest are still ahead.

  • You have spare cash that you don’t need soon.

  • Closing the loan doesn’t leave you without an emergency fund.

Pause and think when

  • Little interest is left, so the savings are small.

  • You’d drain your emergency savings to close it.

  • You’d take a costlier loan to close this one. That only moves the debt.

No column is “best.” Part payment rules aren’t stated on the bank pages we checked, so ask the bank before you plan on one.

How Does IDFC Personal Loan Foreclosure Affect Your CIBIL Score?

A closed loan with clean payments is a good record. After the bank updates the credit bureau, your report shows the loan as “Closed.”

Foreclosing a personal loan does not automatically reduce your CIBIL score. Once the lender reports the account as closed, the impact on your credit score depends on your overall credit profile, including repayment history, existing debt, and other active credit accounts. Your score may increase, decrease, or remain unchanged. Borrowers should verify that the loan is correctly reported as closed rather than expect a particular score movement.

We haven’t given any score numbers or update timelines. They vary from person to person, and none have been verified by the bank. Here’s what to do:

  • Check your credit report about a month after closing.

  • Make sure the loan shows as closed, not active.

  • If it still shows active, write to the bank with your NOC as proof.

  • If the bank doesn’t fix it, raise a correction with the bureau.

Credit Insights shows your score and what’s affecting it. For the full steps, read how to update your CIBIL score after loan closure.

How FREED Helps If You Have More Than One Loan to Close

If this is your only loan, you may not need anything beyond the steps above. That’s a good outcome.

But some people find that closing one loan just moves the pressure. You still have other EMIs and cards, each on its own date. For readers like Priya, who are still paying but feel stretched, consolidation can help.

FREED’s Loan Consolidation Plan, also called the Debt Consolidation Program (“Reduce My EMI”), is for people who can still repay but need a smarter way to manage their debt. FREED looks at your full picture and matches you to a lending partner from its network. Subject to eligibility and lending partner approval, borrowers may be able to consolidate multiple eligible unsecured loans and credit card dues into a single loan with one monthly repayment. The new EMI will depend on the interest rate, repayment tenure, and applicable charges. Although consolidation may reduce monthly repayment pressure, a lower EMI is not guaranteed, and extending the repayment tenure could increase the total interest payable.”

FREED handles the process end to end. The fee is success-based. It’s charged only when consolidation is completed. No outcome is guaranteed.

If you’re unsure whether you qualify, FREED’s team can assess your situation in a free call and let you know what options are available. If you’re behind on IDFC EMIs, don’t wait. Talk to the FREED team, and they will check your situation.

FREED covers unsecured loans and cards only.
