Key Summary

  • SBI personal loan foreclosure charges are 2% of the amount prepaid, for full or part payment.

  • Defence loans: nil after 6 months. Government and Corporate: nil after 3 years. Platinum and Rhodium salary package: nil after 6 months.

  • No charge if you close within the 3-day cooling-off period after sanction.

  • SBI’s Xpress Credit rate stays fixed for the full loan, so RBI’s 2026 floating-rate fee ban usually doesn’t apply.

  • Closing a ₹5 lakh loan after 24 EMIs could save about ₹54,200 even after the charge and GST.

What Are SBI Personal Loan Foreclosure Charges in 2026?

SBI personal loan foreclosure charges are a fee for closing your loan early (this is called foreclosure). SBI takes 2% of the amount you prepay. Some groups of borrowers pay nothing after a set period. Here is the full picture.

The charge is 2% of whatever you prepay. It applies whether you close the loan fully or pay only a part. So if you prepay ₹1,00,000, the charge is ₹2,000.

The rule is the same at 1 month or 30 months into the loan. The only exception is if you fall into one of the waiver groups above.

SBI has other loan types too, such as the Pension Loan and pre-approved YONO loans. They carry their own terms. If you hold one of them, check your KFS (Key Facts Statement, the one-page summary of your loan). To see what closing does to your report, read how to update your CIBIL score after loan closure.

Who Can Close an SBI Personal Loan Without Any Charge?

This is what most readers really want to know. Here is each group, with an example.

Defence salary customers. You pay nil if you close the loan after 6 months from sanction. A Defence employee 8 months into the loan can close it with no charge.

Government and Corporate sector customers. You pay nil after 3 years. A Government employee 2 years in still pays 2%. After 3 years, it drops to nil.

A fresh loan under the same scheme. A Corporate customer can take a new loan under the same scheme after 6 months. That money can close the old loan without the charge.

Platinum and Rhodium salary package holders. You pay nil after 6 months from sanction.

Everyone. Within the 3-day cooling-off period after sanction, you can close the loan with no prepayment charge.

One caution. SBI’s Xpress Elite page says the charge applies when another bank takes over your loan, even for waiver groups. So if you plan to move the loan, confirm your case with SBI first.

Not sure which group you’re in? Your sanction letter names your scheme. SBI salary account holders often wonder how their credit history affects an offer. Our guide on SBI CIBIL score for personal loan covers it in plain words.

Why Do People Want to Close Their Personal Loan Early?

An increment and arrears land in March. The ₹10,984 EMI still goes out on the 5th. You look at the extra money and wonder if it should go to the loan.

Plenty of salaried borrowers feel that pull. The reasons are practical.

Interest outruns savings. Your loan may cost 10% to 15% a year. Your savings earn less. The gap shows up every month.

A home loan is coming. Banks check your FOIR (the share of your salary that goes to EMIs). One fewer EMI makes the number look cleaner.

EMIs are taking too much. When all your EMIs together pass 50% of your salary, the month gets tight. Closing one loan gives breathing room.

Peace of mind before a job change. A fixed EMI is easier to carry when your salary is steady. Before a move, many people prefer to owe less.

One gentle line. Keep an emergency fund aside before you close. A loan you can still pay is better than an empty safety net.

If you want to see your whole load first, FREED’s EMI Score turns it into one number. And if several EMIs are the real problem, the Debt Consolidation Program is worth a look.

How Much Does SBI Personal Loan Foreclosure Really Cost?

Let’s do the math. Meet Arjun. He is 34 and lives in Pune. He works in the Corporate sector. He has a ₹5,00,000 SBI personal loan at 11.45% fixed for 60 months. His EMI is ₹10,984.

The 11.45% rate is only an example. SBI’s page does not say whether GST applies to the charge, so check your foreclosure statement. Rates and charges shown are indicative and based on SBI’s published terms at the time of writing. Final charges depend on your loan agreement and KFS. Please verify directly with SBI. FREED is not a Loan Provider.

Walk through the rows. After 12 EMIs, Arjun pays ₹8,428 and saves ₹1,05,815 in interest. He is about ₹97,400 ahead.

After 24 EMIs, the charge is ₹6,666. He saves ₹62,092. With GST included, he is about ₹54,200 ahead.

At 37 EMIs, the waiver applies. The charge is nil. But only ₹26,761 of interest is left to save.

Here is the point. Waiting for a foreclosure charge waiver does not necessarily mean greater savings. Borrowers should compare the additional interest payable during the waiting period against the foreclosure fee they would avoid. The calculation should also account for the changing outstanding principal, remaining tenure and applicable taxes. Request a foreclosure statement from SBI before deciding whether to close the loan immediately or wait for a waiver.

Rule of thumb: if your money is ready, the SBI personal loan foreclosure charges are rarely a reason to wait. Months of extra interest usually cost more than the 2%.

Your own rate will change every number. For a plain look at how banks build an EMI, read how banks calculate EMI.

Does RBI’s 2026 Rule Remove SBI’s Foreclosure Charges?

Usually, no. This is a common confusion, so here is the short version.

From 1 January 2026, RBI bars prepayment charges on floating-rate loans given to individuals for personal use. The rule sits in RBI’s Pre-payment Charges on Loans Directions, 2025. It applies to loans sanctioned or renewed on or after that date.

SBI’s Xpress Credit works differently. Its rates are linked to the 2-year MCLR, but they stay fixed for the whole loan, with no reset. So the loan counts as a fixed rate. That means SBI’s 2% charge can still apply. The RBI rule does not cancel it.

To check your own loan, open your KFS and find the “interest rate type” line. It will say fixed or floating. Our guide to floating interest rate calculation explains the difference.

One protection does apply to every loan. Any prepayment charge must be written in your sanction letter, your loan agreement, and your KFS. A charge that was not disclosed cannot be added later.

What the Law Says

A bank can’t charge a prepayment fee that wasn’t disclosed in your sanction letter, loan agreement, and KFS.

How to Apply for SBI Personal Loan Foreclosure, Step by Step

You can close an SBI loan through YONO or at your branch. Follow these six steps.

  1. Find your loan scheme and sanction date. Both are in your sanction letter. They tell you whether a waiver applies.

  2. Check the closing amount. Look on YONO or ask your home branch for a foreclosure statement. The statement gives the exact amount to pay.

  3. Check the statement line by line. Look at the principal, interest till date, the charge, and any GST. An error is easier to fix before you pay.

  4. Pay through YONO pre-closure or at the branch. Pay from your own account and save the receipt. The receipt is your proof of payment.

  5. Collect the closure letter and NOC. The NOC is your no dues certificate. It proves the loan is fully closed.

  6. Stop the standing instruction on your salary account. This is the order that sends your EMI each month. Stopping it makes sure no EMI goes out after closure.

SBI says the loan account can be pre-closed through YONO. If you prefer to talk, the SBI contact centre is 1800 1234.

Is Part Payment Better Than Closing the Whole SBI Loan?

Maybe you have some money, but not enough to close the loan. Part payment can help. The 2% charge applies to part payments too, on the amount you pay.

Back to Arjun. After 24 EMIs, he pays ₹1,00,000 toward the loan. The charge is 2%, which is ₹2,000. With GST, it is about ₹2,360. His loan ends about 12 months sooner. He saves about ₹33,400 in interest. Net, he is about ₹31,000 ahead.

The example assumes your EMI stays the same and the loan ends sooner. SBI’s pages I checked do not say whether a part payment cuts your EMI or your tenure. Confirm with SBI before you pay.

Part payment keeps a cushion in your account while it cuts interest. That suits many salaried borrowers.

What Happens to Your CIBIL Score After You Close an SBI Loan?

A foreclosed loan shows as “Closed”. That is a clean status. It keeps your good payment record on the report.

Here is what to expect. You have one fewer active loan. Your score may move a little, up or down, as your credit mix changes. In one sentence: “Settled” means less than the full amount was paid, and foreclosure is not that. For the difference, read bank loan settlement vs closure.

Reporting is faster now. From 1 July 2026, RBI requires banks to send credit information to bureaus as on the 9th, 16th, 23rd and last day of every month. So a closure usually shows within a few weeks.

If the status is not updated after 45 days, raise a dispute with the bureau. Attach your NOC as proof. Our guide to updating your CIBIL score after loan closure walks you through it.

How FREED Helps If Your SBI Loan Is One of Several EMIs

Say your SBI loan is one of three or four EMIs. Closing just one will not ease the month. That is where FREED’s Loan Consolidation Plan, called “Reduce My EMI”, comes in. It is for people who can still repay but need a smarter way to manage their debt.

Here is how it works. FREED looks at all your loans, cards, and income. It matches you to a lending partner. One new loan then pays off the SBI loan and your other unsecured loans and card dues together.

Subject to eligibility and lending partner approval, FREED's Loan Consolidation Plan may help borrowers combine multiple unsecured loans and credit card dues into a single monthly repayment. Applying for a new loan may affect your credit score through credit enquiries and changes to your credit profile. Timely repayments may support your credit health over time, but a higher credit score is not guaranteed. Borrowers should also compare the new loan's interest rate, tenure and applicable charges before proceeding.

On cost, FREED charges a success-based fee. It applies only when your consolidation is completed. There is no upfront fee. Separately, SBI’s charge on the old loan and any processing fee on the new loan belong to those banks. They are not FREED’s charges.

The plan covers unsecured loans and card dues. It is not for home, car, gold or education loans. FREED does the work for you. It handles the matching and the process from start to finish.

What Should You Check After Closing Your SBI Personal Loan?

You paid the last rupee. A few quick checks make sure the loan is really closed.

  • Keep the NOC and closure letter in two places. Save one copy on your phone and one in a folder. If the original goes missing, you will have a backup.

  • Check next month’s salary account statement. Look for any stray EMI debit. A forgotten standing instruction can slip through.

  • Ask for a refund if an EMI went out after closure. Show your NOC to the branch. Give the date and the amount.

  • Check your credit report in 30 to 45 days. The loan should show as “Closed”. If it does not, raise the dispute with your NOC.

Then do one more thing. Move the old EMI amount into savings. You lived with that payment for months, so your budget already works without it. Sending it straight to savings builds a cushion without feeling any pinch.

If other EMIs still weigh on you, you do not have to carry them alone.
