Kotak Personal Loan Foreclosure: Process and Charges

Foreclosure means paying off your entire Kotak personal loan before the last EMI date. You pay the outstanding amount, accrued interest, and a foreclosure charge plus GST. The loan then closes, and you receive a No Dues Certificate.

Key Summary

  • Kotak’s help page states 4% plus GST up to 3 years, and 2% plus GST after 3 years.

  • A lock-in applies. For tenures over 18 months, it is 12 months.

  • You can ask for the foreclosure statement through the Kotak app, a branch, or the contact centre.

  • Closing early only pays when the interest you save beats the fee.

  • Pay, then call Kotak to confirm. Collect your NOC and check your credit report.

Kotak Personal Loan Foreclosure Charges and Lock-in

The annual bonus landed this morning. ₹2 lakh is still owed on the Kotak personal loan. So the obvious question pops up: what will Kotak charge if you close it today?

Kotak’s help page lays out the charges for Kotak personal loan foreclosure in two slabs:

  • Up to 3 years from the start of the loan: 4% of the foreclosure amount, plus GST.

  • After 3 years: 2% of the foreclosure amount, plus GST.

What does “foreclosure amount” mean here? It could be the principal you still owe, or the full amount payable on the day you close. Pages online describe it both ways. Your foreclosure statement will show the exact base, so check that line first.

Then there is the lock-in, a minimum period before you can close the loan at all. The same Kotak help page sets it by tenure:

  • Tenure of 18 months or less: a lock-in of 50% of the tenure.

  • Tenure above 18 months: a lock-in of 12 months.

The page also says no waiver is offered on the charge, the lock-in, or the time taken to process.

One honest caution. Another Kotak help page says foreclosure is possible after serving your first EMI. Kotak’s help pages describe a lock-in, but your loan agreement is what counts. Check it for your own terms.

GST is charged on the foreclosure charge, not on the whole loan amount.

Where do you confirm all this? Look at three papers: your sanction letter, your loan agreement and your Key Facts Statement (KFS, the one-page summary of your loan). If you want to understand how your EMI splits into interest and principal, read EMI meaning and the maths.

Is It Worth Foreclosing Your Kotak Personal Loan?

Here is the rule in plain words. Foreclose when the interest you would still pay is clearly more than the fee.

Let’s put rupees on it. This is an illustration, not a Kotak quote. Say you still owe ₹2,00,000, at an assumed 14% a year, with 24 months left. Your EMI would be about ₹9,603. Over those 24 months, you would still pay about ₹30,462 in interest.

Case A: closing within 3 years (4%). The fee is ₹8,000, plus GST of ₹1,440, so ₹9,440 in total. You save ₹30,462 in interest, minus the fee. That leaves you about ₹21,022 ahead.

Case B: closing after 3 years (2%). The fee is ₹4,000, plus GST of ₹720, so ₹4,720 in total. That leaves you about ₹25,742 ahead.

Now see how the picture changes with fewer months left. Same assumptions: ₹2,00,000 owed and 14% a year. GST is shown at an assumed 18%.

Working: interest still to pay = (EMI × months left) minus ₹2,00,000. Fee = ₹2,00,000 × 4% or 2%, plus 18% GST. Rates and ranges shown are indicative. Final terms decided by the bank. FREED is not a Loan Provider. No outcome is guaranteed. Please verify directly with your bank.

Look at the bottom rows. With only 3 months left, the interest saved is tiny, and the fee eats all of it. You would pay more by closing early than by just finishing the loan.

So timing matters a lot. More months left means more interest saved. And the fee stays the same.

One warning before you act. Use money you are sure you can spare. If foreclosing empties your emergency fund, one surprise bill could push you into a new loan at a higher rate. For the maths behind these numbers, read how banks calculate EMI and the EMI formula banks use.

How to Foreclose a Kotak Personal Loan, Step by Step

Once the numbers make sense, here is how Kotak personal loan foreclosure works in practice:

  1. Check your lock-in and fee. Open your loan agreement and confirm when foreclosure is allowed for you, and at what charge. This avoids a wasted request.

  2. Request the foreclosure statement. Kotak’s help page lists three routes. In the Kotak app, go to Support, then Loans, then “Loan closure statement”. You can also visit a Kotak Retail Assets branch, or call the contact centre on 1800 4100.

  3. Wait for the statement. Kotak’s page gives a turnaround of 3 days.

  4. Read every line. Check the outstanding amount, the interest accrued, the closure charge, GST, and the last date the statement is valid. A wrong line is easier to fix before you pay.

  5. Pay as the statement says. Follow the exact payment method written on your statement. [VERIFY: current payment modes.] Pay before the valid date, because the amount changes after it.

  6. Call Kotak after paying. Kotak’s help page asks you to call the contact centre and tell them you have paid. This helps the closure move forward.

  7. Expect a verification call. Kotak may call to ask why you are closing the loan and for an alternate mobile number. This is a normal check.

Contact centre hours differ between Kotak’s own help pages, so check the bank’s site for current timings.

One safety line. Pay only in the way Kotak’s written statement says. Never send money to a personal account, and never share an OTP with anyone who calls you.

RBI’s Prepayment Rules: When the Fee Is Not Allowed

RBI has issued new directions on prepayment charges, and they matter for anyone planning a Kotak personal loan foreclosure. But they cover only some loans, so read this part carefully.

Which loans they cover. RBI’s Pre-payment Charges on Loans Directions, 2025 apply to loans sanctioned or renewed on or after 1 January 2026. Loans sanctioned before that date sit outside these directions. If your loan started in 2024 or 2025, these rules do not change your charge.

When no fee is allowed. For floating-rate loans given to individuals for non-business purposes, banks cannot charge a prepayment fee. A floating rate is one that can change during the loan. This applies regardless of the source of the money you use to repay. There is also no minimum lock-in for these loans.

What about fixed-rate loans? Many personal loans are fixed-rate, meaning the rate stays the same for the whole loan. For these, charges follow the bank’s own approved policy. So check your sanction letter or KFS. It will say whether your rate is fixed or floating.

Disclosure. Any prepayment charge must be written in your sanction letter, loan agreement, and KFS. If a charge was not disclosed there, the bank cannot levy it. And if a bank waived a fee earlier, it cannot charge it later.

Here is a simple way to use this:

  • Check your sanction date. Is it before or after 1 January 2026?

  • Check your rate type. Fixed or floating?

  • Check the KFS. Is a foreclosure charge clearly written there?

These three answers tell you whether the RBI rules help in your case.

About a month after closure

Now, a note on how your credit report reads it. When you pay the full amount, the loan shows as “Closed”. That is a clean status. “Settled” is different. It means the bank accepted less than what was owed. Foreclosure is full payment, so it is closed, not settled.

How soon will the report change? Give it about a month. Then pull your report and look for the Kotak loan. Credit Insights shows your score, what is affecting it, and the steps that can help.

What if the entry is wrong? Say the loan still shows as active. First, write to Kotak with your NOC and payment receipt. If that does not fix it, raise a dispute with the credit bureau. Our guide on how to update your CIBIL score after loan closure walks through this.

If you are curious how a clearance letter works in the other case, read NOC after loan settlement. It shows why “closed” and “settled” are treated so differently.

Make sure the loan shows as closed.

If You Cannot Afford to Foreclose, What Else Can You Do?

Not everyone searching for a Kotak personal loan foreclosure has spare cash. Often the EMI is just too heavy, and you want out. That is a different problem with different answers.

First, a cheaper loan through a balance transfer. This moves your loan to another bank at a lower interest rate. Your EMI or total interest can drop. Remember to add Kotak’s foreclosure charge to the maths, since the old loan still closes early. Read about the personal loan balance transfer interest rate and balance transfer eligibility.

Next, consolidation. If this Kotak loan is one of several EMIs, check your total burden. Say you earn ₹60,000 a month and your EMIs add up to ₹33,000. That is 55% of your income, past the 50% mark where trouble usually starts. FREED’s Loan Consolidation Plan may help eligible borrowers consolidate multiple unsecured loans and credit card dues into a single loan, subject to lending partner approval. The new EMI depends on the approved interest rate, repayment tenure and applicable charges. Applying for consolidation may also affect your CIBIL score through credit enquiries and changes to your credit profile. Neither a lower EMI nor an improved credit score is guaranteed.”The consolidate credit card debt guide has more.

Last, settlement. Settlement is not something a borrower chooses out of preference. Banks only consider it when someone is in genuine financial difficulty and truly unable to repay. For borrowers facing genuine repayment difficulties, FREED’s Loan Settlement Plan may help develop a structured savings strategy and explore settlement negotiations with creditors. Any settlement depends on the creditor's approval and the borrower's circumstances. The amount of debt reduction, if any, cannot be guaranteed. Borrowers should also consider the potential negative impact of a ‘Settled’ status on their credit report.” It leaves a “Settled” mark on your report, so it is a last resort. If recovery calls start, FREED Shield helps you report harassment and prepare a complaint. It is a self-service support tool, not legal representation.
