Kotak Bank EMI Bounce Charges: What Happens and What to Do
Kotak Bank EMI bounce charges may apply when a personal loan EMI cannot be collected on its due date. Depending on the applicable loan terms and fee schedule, the borrower may also owe penal charges or overdue interest. The exact amount depends on the lender’s current terms and the period for which the payment remains overdue.

What Is a Kotak EMI Bounce and What Happens Right Away?
The SMS lands: “Your EMI debit failed.” Your stomach drops. You were sure the money was there. Or you meant to top up the account, and the day got away.
A Kotak EMI bounce means the bank tried to collect your loan EMI (the fixed monthly instalment) on its due date, and the payment did not go through. Kotak then treats that EMI as overdue.
This page covers Kotak personal loan EMIs. Credit card dues, home loans and customers who moved over from another bank each have their own schedules. Check yours before relying on any figure here.
Here is what can happen right away:
- The EMI becomes overdue.
- A bounce fee can apply.
- A penal charge and overdue interest can apply.
- A reminder follows.
A single missed EMI may be resolved by paying the overdue amount, but fees and interest may already have accrued. Contact the lender promptly, confirm the total amount due and ask for a written breakdown before making the payment.
Take Priya. She has paid every EMI on time for two years. One month her salary lands a day late, and the debit fails. She did nothing careless. A bounce like hers is common, and it has a simple fix, covered further down.
First, why does it happen?
Why Does a Kotak EMI Bounce?
Most bounces have an ordinary cause. These are the ones that show up most often:
- Low balance on the debit date. The money simply isn’t in the account when the bank tries to collect. Even a small shortfall can fail the whole EMI.
- Salary credited after the EMI date. If your pay arrives on the 5th and your EMI is on the 3rd, the debit fails every month.
- Mandate limit or expiry. A mandate (the auto-debit instruction you gave your bank) has a limit and an end date. If either is crossed, the debit stops.
- A changed or closed account. If you switched salary accounts, the old instruction may point nowhere.
- A bank holiday or technical failure. Sometimes the cause is on the bank’s side, not yours.
If the EMI was debited from an account held at a different bank, check that bank’s current schedule of charges to see whether a failed debit may attract a separate return fee. Whether a fee applies depends on the account terms and the circumstances of the failed transaction.
Check your account bank’s fee schedule to see.
If bounces are becoming regular, look at the bigger picture. Your EMI Score is a quick self-check of how heavy your EMIs are against your income.
Now, what does Kotak list as charges?
How Much Are Kotak Bank EMI Bounce Charges?
Here is what Kotak’s personal loan fees page lists. These are Kotak’s own figures. The bank calls its charges indicative, and they may change.
| Charge | What Kotak’s page lists (personal loan) | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Bounce / dishonour fee | ₹750 per instance, inclusive of taxes | Indicative, may change |
| Penal charge | 8% per annum plus taxes on the overdue amount | Charged for the actual days overdue |
| Overdue interest | Contractual rate on the overdue EMI for the delayed days | Separate from the penal charge |
Here is what each line means. The bounce fee is a one-time fee for each failed attempt. The penal charge builds up on the overdue amount for the days it stays unpaid. The overdue interest runs at your loan’s own rate for the days of delay.
RBI sets rules around these. Penal charges must be disclosed in your loan agreement, in the Key Fact Statement (a one-page summary of your loan terms) and on the lender’s website. Reminders must state them too. And no further interest may be charged on a penal charge.
If a charge looks wrong, raise it with Kotak. Kotak’s grievance levels run from a call-back to its Nodal Officer, then its Principal Nodal Officer. If the complaint isn’t resolved after 30 days, you can go to the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in.
Credit card dues work differently. RBI’s circular on penal charges excludes cards, so see Kotak credit card settlement guide for those.

Book My CallWhat Happens After a Kotak EMI Bounce?
The steps below usually follow a bounce. The exact timing depends on your loan and your lender.
- Overdue status. The EMI is now unpaid, and the loan shows as overdue.
- Charges and interest. The bounce fee, penal charge and overdue interest start to apply.
- Reminders. Expect SMS, email or calls asking you to pay.
- A possible collection contact. If the EMI stays unpaid, the lender may assign someone to follow up.
- Credit reporting. Lenders report to credit bureaus, and a missed EMI can show on your report.
On that last point, RBI has moved lenders towards weekly credit data submissions. So a missed EMI can reach your report sooner than before.
Here is a rights note. Collection calls cannot come before 8:00 a.m. or after 7:00 p.m. Read more in RBI recovery agent rules. For a wider look at what a bounce sets off, see what happens when an EMI bounces.
None of this has to spiral. The earlier you pay, the less builds up.
So how do you fix it?
How Do You Fix a Kotak EMI Bounce?
- Add funds and check the mandate. Confirm the balance, account and mandate limit.
- Pay the overdue EMI. Use Netbanking or the mobile app.
- Ask Kotak to adjust the payment. Kotak’s help page says to call the contact centre so it is applied to the overdue amount.
- Ask for the amount in writing. Include the EMI, bounce fee, penal charge and interest.
- Align the debit date. Move it after your salary credit if the bank allows.
- Check your credit report. Look for the update once the lender reports it.
Use the number on Kotak’s app or website for step 3. Numbers change, so we haven’t printed one here.
You can politely ask Kotak to waive a charge. No waiver is guaranteed, but asking costs nothing.
One bounce can be fixed fast. If bounces keep coming, you need a different plan. The next section covers that.

Check My CreditWhat Are Your Options If EMIs Keep Bouncing?
Order matters here. Start with the lightest option.
If you can still pay, ask Kotak for revised terms or a changed EMI date. A new date that follows your salary can fix the problem for good. It costs nothing to ask.
A debt consolidation programme may allow you to repay eligible existing unsecured debts through a new loan, leaving you with one EMI instead of several. Before proceeding, compare the interest rate, processing fees, repayment tenure and total amount payable. Your CIBIL score may change depending on your credit profile and how the new loan and existing accounts are reported. Score improvement is not guaranteed.
Only then comes settlement, and only for borrowers who truly cannot repay. Settlement is not something a borrower chooses out of preference. It is for people in genuine difficulty. The account shows “Settled” on your report, which affects future loans. If you are in that place, read Kotak loan settlement for the full steps. You can also look at FREED’s Debt Resolution Program.
Most people with a bounce or two don’t need settlement. They need a date change or a lighter EMI load.
How Does FREED Help When EMIs Keep Bouncing?
FREED’s Loan Consolidation Plan, also called the Debt Consolidation Program (“Reduce My EMI”), is for people who can still repay but need a smarter way to manage their debt.
Here is how it works. FREED looks at your financial profile and matches you to a lending partner from its network. That partner pays off all your existing eligible unsecured loans and card dues. You’re then left with one lender, one EMI and one due date.
The new EMI is lower than your combined EMIs were before. Your CIBIL score doesn’t drop, and it begins to improve. The new loan can only be used to pay existing eligible debt. The whole process is 100% online.
The fee is success-based. FREED charges it only when consolidation is done. If one lending partner rejects the application, FREED tries other partners that match your profile.
FREED has counselled 20,00,000+ customers and managed ₹3,200 Cr+ in debt. That is a lot of people in your position.
FREED covers unsecured loans only, not secured ones. If you’re unsure whether you qualify, talk to FREED’s team. They will check your situation. You can read more on FREED’s Debt Consolidation Program.

Book My Call → https://freed.care/contact-usWhat Does a Kotak EMI Bounce Do to Your CIBIL Score?
Honestly, it depends on how long the EMI stays unpaid. A single bounce repaid quickly is very different from a missed EMI that sits overdue for weeks.
The key term is DPD (days past due, the number of days an EMI is late). The more days overdue, the more your report is affected. A short delay is a small mark. A long delay is a bigger one.
We haven’t given a point drop here. It varies from person to person, and no one can promise a number. We also haven’t claimed a grace period. Check your own loan terms for that.
What can you do? Pay the overdue EMI fast, and keep every later EMI on time. Check your report once Kotak has updated it, in case of errors. For more, see how to clear DPD in your CIBIL report. If a bounce came from a cheque, read bounced cheque and your CIBIL score.
What Helps Prevent Another Kotak EMI Bounce?
A few small habits go a long way:
- Keep a buffer of one EMI in the debit account. Even a small cushion covers a late salary.
- Match the EMI date to your salary date. If your pay lands on the 5th, ask for a date on the 7th.
- Set a reminder two days before. A phone alert gives you time to top up.
- Review mandate limits yearly. An old limit can quietly block a bigger EMI.
- Talk to the lender early if cash is tight. Banks respond better before a miss than after.
If calls start to feel like pressure, read how to file a complaint about recovery agent harassment.
One bounce is a bump. A plan keeps it from becoming a pattern.
