Balance Transfer Credit Cards SBI: Best Offers and How to Apply

Balance transfer credit cards SBI offers let you move dues from another bank's card to your SBI card, at a lower rate for a set window. SBI runs more than one plan option, so "best offer" here means the plan that fits your repayment speed, not a single fixed rate. Applying takes a few minutes through the website, app, SMS, or customer care

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • SBI's balance transfer credit cards run more than one plan option at a time. Which one costs less depends on how fast you can repay, not the advertised rate alone.

  • You can apply through four channels: SBI Card website, the SBI Card app, SMS, or customer care.

  • Minimum transfer amount is ₹5,000. Maximum is 75% of your available SBI card limit.

  • Funds usually reach your other bank's card in 3 to 5 working days, so keep paying the old card's minimum due until it clears.

  • This piece covers current offers and the application steps. For the full mechanism, how balance transfer actually works step by step, see the companion article linked below.

If you're still trying to understand how a balance transfer works as a mechanism, rather than which SBI plan to pick, our companion piece on how SBI credit card balance transfer works covers that ground in full, so this article won't repeat it here. What follows is specific to choosing between SBI's current offers and getting one booked.

Why the "Best" Offer Depends on How Fast You Can Repay

It's easy to see "0% interest" and stop reading right there. Most people do. Then a few months in, they realise the plan with a small monthly rate and no upfront fee would have actually cost them less, because they needed more time than the fee-free window gave them.

Here's what that looks like with real numbers. Say you're moving ₹1,00,000. On shorter plan, you pay 2% fee upfront, ₹2,000 plus GST, then 0% interest for 60 days. If you clear full ₹1,00,000 within those 60 days, total cost is just that ₹2,000-odd fee, plan wins clearly. But if you can only manage ₹20,000/month, you'll still carry ₹40,000 when 60 days end, and that remainder jumps straight to standard card rate, often 30% to 48% a year depending on issuer.

Now run same ₹1,00,000 through longer plan. No fee upfront, interest builds at roughly 1.7%/month across 180 days. Spread over six months at a realistic repayment pace, the total interest paid can end up lower than the shorter plan's fee plus its post-window interest, purely because you never hit that expensive reversion rate. The plan that "sounds" cheaper on day one isn't always the one that costs less by the time your balance is actually cleared.

Who Can Apply for SBI Balance Transfer?

Before comparing plans further, it helps to know if you're even eligible to book one. SBI keeps the basic requirements fairly simple.

  • You must be the primary cardholder. Add-on or supplementary cardholders can't book a balance transfer in their own name.
  • The dues must be on a different bank's card. SBI doesn't allow transferring a balance from one SBI card to another SBI card, even if you hold more than one.
  • You need some available limit on your SBI card. The transfer amount comes out of your existing SBI credit limit, so there has to be room for it.
  • A healthier credit profile generally improves your approval odds and the rate offered. SBI doesn't publish one fixed cutoff for this, so the practical answer is that the stronger your recent repayment history, the better your options tend to be.

If any of these don't fit your situation, for instance, if the balance you're trying to move is actually spread across two or three cards rather than one, that changes what you should be applying for. More on that further down.

How to Apply for SBI Balance Transfer, Step by Step

SBI gives you four separate ways to book a balance transfer. Pick whichever one is easiest for you, they all lead to the same result.

  1. 1

Apply through the SBI Card website.

Log in to your online account, go to the "Benefits" section, select Balance Transfer, and choose your amount and plan.

  2. 2

Apply through the SBI Card app.

Log in with your MPIN, fingerprint, or Face ID, then find the balance transfer option under the benefits or offers menu. This is usually the fastest route if you're already on your phone.

  3. 3

    Apply by SMS.

Send BT to 56767 from your registered mobile number. An SBI representative will typically call you back to confirm the details. Confirm this keyword is still current before relying on it, SBI does occasionally update its SMS commands.

  4. 4

    Apply through customer care.

Call SBI Card's helpline at 39020202 or 1860 180 1290 and ask for balance transfer booking. This is worth using if you're genuinely unsure which of the two plans fits your situation, since an executive can walk you through both.

  5. 5

    Confirm with an OTP.

Whichever channel you use, you'll get an OTP on your registered mobile number to finalise the request. Nothing is booked until this step clears.

FREED Expert Tip

Keep paying at least the minimum on your old card until the transfer actually reflects, it usually takes a few working days, not instantly.

What Happens After You Apply?

Once your request is confirmed, SBI typically settles the amount with your other bank within 3 to 5 working days, faster for Visa cards paid through Visa Money Transfer, slightly longer for other networks where a cheque or demand draft is issued instead.

Until that settlement actually lands, your old card still shows the balance as due. Missing a payment on it during this gap can trigger a late fee or dent your credit record, even though you've already applied for the transfer, so keep paying the minimum until you see the balance clear on the old card's statement.

One detail that catches people off guard: making new purchases on your SBI card while a balance transfer is active can suspend the usual interest-free period on those new purchases. New spending may start earning interest from the transaction date itself, rather than getting the normal grace period, until the transferred balance is paid down. If you're planning to use the card normally during this window, it's worth checking this with SBI directly before you swipe.

What the Law Says

Under RBI's Master Direction on Credit Card and Debit Card Issuance and Conduct, lenders required to clearly disclose all fees and effective annual rate on any credit card offer, including balance transfer plans, before you confirm.

What If You Have Dues on More Than One Card?

A balance transfer moves one card's dues to your SBI card. That works cleanly if you have exactly one expensive balance sitting elsewhere. It works a lot less cleanly if you're carrying dues across two, three, or more cards at once, since a single transfer only ever touches one of them.

If that's closer to your situation, applying for another balance transfer just adds a new due date and a new plan to track, on top of the ones you already have. The actual problem, several EMIs pulling from the same income each month, doesn't go away.

This is exactly what FREED's Debt Consolidation Program is built for. Instead of moving one balance to one new card, it may consolidate eligible unsecured debts into a structured repayment through a matched lending partner, subject to eligibility and lender approval, so you're left with one EMI instead of several. If you're weighing this against a straightforward SBI transfer, our broader comparison on balance transfer credit cards across major Indian banks is worth a read too, since it lays out when a transfer alone stops being enough.
