Net NPA: Meaning, Formula, and Banking Impact

Net NPA is what's left of a bank's bad loans (NPAs, loans overdue 90+ days) once you subtract the provisions it has set aside for losses. It's the number that tells you a bank's real exposure, not the headline figure. For a borrower, though, an NPA tag on your own account means something more immediate: an NPA tag on your own account may significantly affect your credit profile, lead to recovery activity, and make future borrowing more difficult.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Net NPA is Gross NPA minus provisions. It shows a bank's real bad-loan exposure, not the raw total.

  • RBI classifies any loan overdue 90 days or more as a Non-Performing Asset. No exceptions, no lender discretion.

  • A Net NPA ratio under 3% to 4% is usually read as a sign of a healthy bank.

  • An NPA classification may significantly affect your credit report and future lender assessments.

  • Loans settled after turning NPA still carry a "Settled" tag on your credit report for up to 7 years.

What Is Net NPA?

Gross NPA comes first, and it's the simpler of the two. It's just the total value of a bank's loans overdue 90 days or more, no adjustments made yet. Net NPA takes that number and subtracts the provisions, money the bank has already set aside to absorb expected losses on those bad loans.

Net NPA = Gross NPA − Provisions

Turn that into a ratio against the bank's advances (the total amount actually lent out) and you get:

Net NPA Ratio = (Net NPA ÷ Net Advances) × 100

A bank sitting under 3% to 4% on this ratio is usually considered financially sound, though the exact benchmark moves around depending on the bank's size and whatever RBI's current norms say. Don't treat 3-4% as gospel, it's a rough marker, not a hard line.

That's the bank's side of the story. What matters more if you're actually reading this because your own loan is in trouble is where you fit into that number, and that's where the rest of this piece goes.

Why Do Loans Turn Into NPAs?

Nobody's loan turns NPA because they stopped caring. A job that disappears, a hospital bill that arrives at the wrong time, an income that quietly shrinks, or debt that's been piling up faster than anyone noticed, that's usually the real story behind an NPA account.

And the 90-day rule isn't the bank deciding to be harsh with you. RBI requires it. The moment interest or principal on a loan crosses 90 continuous days overdue, the bank has to classify it as NPA. There's no judgment call involved on the bank's end, it's simply what the rule says.

Before an account gets there, though, there are earlier stages with their own warning signs, and those are worth knowing before you're staring at an NPA tag with no time left to act.

What Are the Signs Your Loan Is Becoming an NPA?

An account rarely jumps straight from "fine" to NPA overnight. There's usually a build-up, and catching it early gives you options that disappear later.

  • Missed one or two EMI due dates, and the reminder notices from the bank have started coming in.
  • Recovery calls have begun, even if right now they're just polite reminder calls, not anything aggressive yet.
  • Your account shows an SMA flag (Special Mention Account, RBI's early-warning stage before NPA) if you check your bank statement or credit report closely.
  • An auto-debit for your EMI bounced, once or more than once.
  • Your credit utilisation across cards has been climbing for a while, often because money that should go toward one loan is quietly covering another.

Notice more than one of these on your own account? Our breakdown of the SMA and NPA staging system goes into which exact stage you're probably in and what's still on the table at each one.

Why Does Net NPA Matter for Your Own Loan?

Most explanations of Net NPA stop at the bank's balance sheet. But if your account is one of the loans sitting inside that Gross NPA number, if it's part of why the bank had to set aside those provisions in the first place, there's a very different, very personal consequence waiting on your side of it.

A CIBIL score typically falls 150 to 300 points once an NPA tag lands. That's not a dip you shrug off, it's enough to turn a decent credit profile into one that gets rejected everywhere. Recovery activity tends to start around this same point too, calls and notices first, sometimes escalating depending on what kind of loan it is. Future applications for loans or credit cards may be assessed more cautiously by lenders. And if there's a co-borrower or guarantor attached to the loan, their credit takes the hit right alongside yours, since the tag applies to the whole account, not just to you.

If you want the fuller picture of what actually changes once this tag hits your file, our explainer on NPA classification covers it in more depth.

What Are Your Options If Your Loan Has Turned NPA?

Settlement is not something a borrower chooses out of preference. Banks and financial companies only consider it when you are in genuine financial difficulty and are truly unable to repay the full amount.

If full repayment is still within reach for you, start there. Clearing the overdue amount and reviving the account keeps you off the "Settled" list entirely, and your credit history stays cleaner in the long run. This only makes sense if the numbers actually work for your situation, not as a stretch you'll be paying for later.

If full repayment genuinely isn't possible anymore, settlement (OTS, one-time settlement) is the more realistic path. Your bank agrees to accept a smaller lump sum as full and final payment, with waivers going up to 50%* depending on the bank. It's not free of cost either way though, a "Settled" tag stays visible on your credit report for up to 7 years.

Freed Expert Tip

Ask your bank for the exact NPA classification date in writing, it fixes when your 7-year CIBIL clock actually starts.

How Does FREED Help With an NPA Loan?

FREED's Loan Settlement Plan, also known as the Debt Resolution Program or "Settle My Loans," is built for exactly this stage. It takes time to work properly, and nobody should expect it to move faster than it realistically can.

FREED starts by looking at your full financial picture, what you earn, what you owe, what you can actually manage each month. From there it builds a savings plan feeding into an SPA (Special Purpose Account), a savings pool held separately from FREED, under an independent trustee. Once enough has built up in that account, FREED goes to your bank and negotiates on your behalf. The bank still makes the final call on terms, and you're the one who decides whether to accept before any money moves. FREED only charges once a settlement actually closes, nothing upfront.

What Helps Protect Your Credit After an NPA Tag?

  • Get the settlement letter in writing before you pay anything. It should spell out the exact amount, the deadline, and confirm no further dues will be claimed once it's paid.
  • Ask your bank for the exact NPA classification date. That date is what starts your 7-year CIBIL visibility clock, so it's worth having in writing.
  • Don't assume the CIBIL update happened just because you paid. Check your report a few weeks later to confirm the status actually changed.
  • If a recovery call turns abusive or threatening, you have options. FREED Shield can help you document what happened, whether or not you're enrolled in any FREED program.

If what you're actually looking at is a "Written Off" tag rather than "Settled," that's a different situation with its own rules, covered in our piece on written-off debt.
