SBI Loan Restructuring: Who Is Eligible and How Your EMI Changes

SBI loan restructuring means asking the bank to change the terms of an existing loan, such as the repayment period or EMI. The COVID-era scheme closed, so any request today is considered case by case under SBI’s own policy. Approval is the bank’s decision, and a longer repayment period usually lowers the EMI but raises the total interest you pay.

Key Summary

  • SBI’s COVID restructuring scheme is closed. A request today is judged case by case by the bank.

  • Approval is SBI’s decision. Nobody can promise it, and nobody can process the closed scheme for a fee.

  • A longer repayment period usually lowers your EMI but raises the total interest you pay.

  • A payment pause (moratorium) also adds interest, so the EMI after it is higher.

  • If SBI says no, consolidation or settlement may be options for unsecured loans.

Is SBI Loan Restructuring Still Available?

The COVID-era scheme is closed. Its window ended on 24 December 2020 for the main route, with a later window that closed on 30 September 2021. Nothing from that scheme is open for new applications today.

That does not mean SBI never changes loan terms. A borrower in genuine difficulty can still write to the bank and ask for revised terms. SBI looks at each request on its own facts and its own approved policy. There is no fixed form that guarantees a yes.

So the honest answer is: the closed scheme is gone, but a request for restructuring may still be considered. This guide shows who SBI is more likely to look at, what changes in your EMI, and what to do if the answer is no.

Rates and ranges shown are indicative. Final terms decided by the bank. FREED is not a Loan Provider. No outcome is guaranteed. Please verify directly with your bank.

What Was the SBI COVID Restructuring Scheme, and Why Is It Closed?

The closed scheme was a one-time relief window for borrowers hit by the pandemic. These were its main points:

PointWhat the closed scheme said
Window closed24 December 2020, and a later window to 30 September 2021
InvocationWithin 90 days of a borrower’s request being accepted
MoratoriumUp to 24 months
Cut-off for eligibilityAccount standard on 1 March 2020
Overdue limitNot more than 30 days overdue on that date

Because that window has shut, the closed scheme cannot be applied for now.

Warning: if anyone offers to process the closed scheme for you for a fee, do not pay. It cannot be processed, and the offer is a red flag.

What the Law Says

A request for new terms is considered under the bank’s own approved policy. No company or caller can promise you an outcome.

Know Your Rights

Who Is Eligible for SBI Loan Restructuring Today?

There is no public eligibility checklist with fixed thresholds, so treat any page that quotes one with care. What we can say is what generally helps your request and what hurts it.

What helpsWhat hurts
A genuine, documented hardship, such as job loss or illnessNo papers to show the hardship
Asking early, before EMIs are missedWaiting until the account is long overdue
A realistic plan to pay the revised EMINo income to support even a lower EMI
A clean earlier repayment recordRepeated defaults on the same loan

The bank decides. A strong request still may not be accepted.

How Does Restructuring Differ by SBI Loan Type?

The type of loan matters.

  • Personal loan: unsecured, so the bank has no asset to fall back on. Revised terms are possible but depend on your repayment record and the hardship.
  • Home loan: secured by the property. Options exist in principle, but ask SBI directly what applies to your loan.
  • Car loan: secured by the vehicle. Ask the bank what it can offer.
  • Education loan: has its own repayment structure. Ask SBI what applies to your account.
  • Credit card: dues can be discussed with the card team, and terms vary.

FREED works with unsecured loans only, such as personal loans and credit cards. Secured loans stay between you and SBI.

How Does Your EMI Change After Restructuring?

Here is an illustration. Say you owe ₹5,17,705 and your EMI is ₹13,663. Over the full term you would pay ₹1,55,835 in interest.

If the repayment period is stretched so that the EMI falls to ₹10,303, the monthly burden is lighter. The cost is that you pay interest for longer, so the total interest rises.

Now think about take-home pay. Suppose it is ₹40,000 a month. An EMI of ₹13,663 takes about 34% of it. An EMI of ₹10,303 takes about 26%.

Illustration only. These are not SBI rates or an SBI offer.

The trade is simple: a lower EMI now, more interest overall. Decide whether the relief is worth the extra cost.

Does a Moratorium Lower Your EMI?

A moratorium is a pause on EMIs for a set period. It gives breathing room, but it does not make the debt smaller. Interest keeps building during the pause.

Take the same loan: ₹5,17,705 outstanding, EMI ₹13,663. A 3-month pause would lift the EMI to about ₹14,147 afterwards. Total interest would rise from ₹1,55,835 to about ₹1,79,059, which is roughly ₹23,224 more.

So a pause helps only if your income is back by the time it ends.

How Do You Ask SBI to Restructure Your Loan?

  1. Write to your SBI branch or the loan team. Do it before you miss EMIs where possible.
  2. Explain the hardship and attach proof, such as a job-loss letter, medical bills or income papers.
  3. State what you are asking for, for example a longer repayment period.
  4. Ask for the revised terms and the credit reporting treatment in writing.
  5. Keep a copy of everything you send and receive.

A short sample letter:

To the Branch Manager, State Bank of India. I request a review of my loan account [number] because [reason, with documents attached]. I ask the bank to consider extending the repayment period so that the EMI becomes manageable. Please confirm the revised terms in writing. Yours sincerely, [name].

What Does Restructuring Do to Your Credit Report?

How a restructured account is reported depends on the bank and RBI rules, and the effect on your score depends on your wider profile. We cannot give you a number.

What you can do is ask. Before you accept any new terms, find out in writing how the change will be reported and whether the account’s classification will change. You can see how your accounts look with Credit Insights.

FREED Expert Tip

Before accepting new terms, ask SBI in writing how the change will appear on your credit report.

What If SBI Says No, or the New EMI Is Still Too High?

A no is not the end. For unsecured loans there are two other routes.

RouteWhat it doesWho it suits
Debt consolidationOne new loan pays off several, leaving one EMIPeople still paying on time with a CIBIL score of 700 or above
Loan settlementThe lender accepts a reduced lump sum to close the loanPeople who genuinely cannot repay in full

FREED’s Loan Consolidation Plan charges zero fee to the customer. Compare the routes in debt restructuring vs debt settlement.

Secured loans, such as home and car loans, are not covered by these two FREED plans.

How Does FREED Help When SBI Restructuring Is Not Enough?

FREED does not negotiate restructuring for you. That request goes from you to your bank.

What FREED does is help you see your options. A counsellor looks at your unsecured loans and helps you work out whether consolidation or the Loan Settlement Plan fits.

In the Loan Settlement Plan, you save a fixed monthly amount into a Special Purpose Account (SPA), held by an independent trusteeship company. When the corpus is enough, FREED negotiates with your lender and prepares the documents. The lender decides the final terms, and you approve each settlement before any payout. It takes time, because the savings come first.

An evaluation fee applies and is non-refundable. A separate success-based fee applies only when a settlement is completed. Banks may reduce dues by up to 50%*.
