Consolidation Lenders in India: What to Check Before You Sign
A debt consolidation company helps you replace several loans and card dues with one new loan and one EMI. In India it's either a bank or NBFC that lends to you directly, or a platform that matches you to one. Where RBI-regulated lending is involved, verify the actual lender and confirm that the arrangement complies with the applicable rules.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
Debt consolidation companies in India merge multiple unsecured debts into one EMI, but only some work through RBI-registered lenders.
Verify the actual lending NBFC or bank name, not just the app or company brand name, before sharing any documents.
RBI operationalised a public Digital Lending Apps directory on 1 July 2025 so borrowers can check whether an app is associated with an RBI-regulated entity.
A Key Fact Statement disclosing the true APR must be shared before you accept any loan, under RBI's Digital Lending Directions, 2025.
Debt consolidation may affect your CIBIL score depending on the credit enquiry, lender reporting, and subsequent repayment history.
What Is a Debt Consolidation Company in India?
A debt consolidation company helps you swap many debts for one. You take a new loan and use the funds to repay eligible cards and personal loans, leaving you with one EMI. The exact process depends on the lender and the consolidation arrangement. That is the idea behind every debt consolidation company in India, whatever its brand name.
There are two types.
Lenders. Banks and NBFCs that give you the consolidation loan themselves. When people search for debt consolidation loan providers, they usually mean these.
Platforms. Companies that assess your profile and connect you with a lender. They may not lend their own money. The actual lender and the terms of the loan should be clearly identified in the loan documents.
Where the arrangement involves RBI-regulated lending, verify the actual lender and check that the loan complies with the applicable rules. That is the one fact to hold on to when the ads start.

Check My Credit InsightsWhat Do Loan Consolidation Services Actually Do?
Loan consolidation services follow roughly the same five steps, whichever company you choose.
You share every loan and card you have.
The company assesses your income, EMIs and credit profile.
You are matched to an RBI-regulated lender.
You review the Key Facts Statement, which shows the APR, fees and repayment schedule.
Your old debts are paid off, and one new EMI starts.
One more step is easy to forget. Keep the closure letters or no-dues certificates for each old account. They help confirm that the old debts have been closed and can support a correction if an account is incorrectly shown as outstanding on your credit report.

Can One Company Consolidate Both Credit Cards and Loans?
Some lenders allow eligible unsecured debts to be consolidated under one new loan. Depending on the lender's criteria, these may include:
personal loans
credit card dues
BNPL balances
loan-app loans
Secured loans, such as home, car and gold loans, are generally assessed separately. FREED's Loan Consolidation Plan covers eligible unsecured debts.
Here is an example (illustrative). Priya has a card balance of ₹1,00,000, a personal loan of ₹1,50,000 and a loan-app loan of ₹50,000. That is ₹3,00,000 across three EMIs and three due dates. After consolidation it becomes one loan and one EMI.
If your debt is mostly one product, there are guides for that. See personal loan consolidation companies and the best company to consolidate credit card debt.

Book My CallHow Do You Check a Debt Consolidation Company Before You Sign?
Run these six checks on any provider. Each one is tied to an RBI rule.
Check | What a genuine company does | Rule |
|---|---|---|
Lender named | Names the RBI-regulated bank or NBFC in writing | The lender is listed with RBI. Check RBI's published list of digital lending apps reported by regulated lenders. |
Key Facts Statement | Gives a KFS with the APR before you sign | RBI/2024-25/18 (KFS) |
Disbursal | Pays into your bank account, or straight to the end-beneficiary for a set end-use. Never into an app's or agent's account. | Digital Lending Directions 2025, Para 9(i) |
Repayment | Goes straight to the lender, never via a third party's pool account | Para 9(ii) |
App permissions | No access to contacts, photos or call logs | Para 12(i) |
Exit option | A cooling-off period to exit a digital loan by paying principal plus proportionate APR | Para 10 |
One caution. RBI says an app appearing on its list is not an endorsement (Para 17(vi)). Being listed shows a regulated lender reported the app. It does not say the deal is good for you. So check the lender, and read the KFS.
Under RBI's Digital Lending Directions, 2025, loan disbursal generally goes to the borrower's bank account, with specified exceptions for direct payment to an end-beneficiary. Repayments must go directly to the regulated lender, rather than through a third-party pool account.
What Makes a Debt Consolidation Loan the Best Choice in India?
People search for the best debt consolidation loans in India, and we do not rank lenders here. "Best" means the lowest total cost for your situation, not the lowest headline rate.
Here is why. Say a lender offers ₹3,00,000 at "12% flat" for 36 months. The EMI is about ₹11,333. That sounds cheap, but the true yearly cost (the APR) is about 21.2%. Add a 2% processing fee and it rises to about 22.7%. (Illustrative.)
So compare the APR, which the KFS must show, not the flat rate. Then look at:
tenure against total interest
foreclosure charges
whether every debt you want to close is covered
A longer tenure generally lowers the EMI but increases the total interest paid over the loan term. Use the debt consolidation calculator to compare your current EMIs with one consolidated EMI.
What Are the Red Flags of a Fake Debt Consolidation App?
Stop if you see any of these:
An upfront "processing fee" or "security deposit" before any loan.
It won't name the lender.
It asks for contact or gallery access.
It guarantees approval without checking you.
It pushes you to decide today.
Money is routed through a personal or third-party account.
If you spot one, don't pay anything. Our guide on a fake loan app harassment complaint explains where to report.
If a fake app's agents are already harassing you, FREED Shield can help with abusive calls or unannounced visits. It is available to everyone.
Stretched across several EMIs?
See whether one lower EMI could replace your stretched payments.
Reduce My EMIShould You Go to a Bank Directly or Use a Matching Platform?
Both routes are fair. The right one depends on your profile and your time.
Go direct to a bank or NBFC if you have a strong score and the time to compare. You run every check above yourself.
Use a matching platform if you want your full picture assessed once and matched to a vetted lender. You still read the lender's KFS before you sign.
Whichever you pick, the lender must be RBI-regulated, and the money must go to the right place. For more on choosing, read about where to apply for a debt consolidation loan.
How Does FREED Help You Consolidate With a Vetted Lender?
FREED's Loan Consolidation Plan works as a matching service. FREED looks at your loans, income and obligations, and matches you to a lending partner from its network. The partner pays off eligible unsecured debts and leaves you with one EMI.
You need a CIBIL score of 700 or above. FREED charges the customer nothing. Any processing or foreclosure fee belongs to the lending partner, and you will see it in the lender's KFS.
If your score is below the stated threshold, a counsellor can discuss other options that may suit your circumstances.
Begin with your own numbers. The EMI Score gives a 0 to 100 read on how stretched you are.
