Unsecured Loans Explained: Meaning, Types, and Benefits
An unsecured loan is money you borrow without giving any property, gold, or asset as security. Bank checks your income and credit score before approving. Personal loans, credit cards, and BNPL are common types. Interest is usually higher since bank takes more risk.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
No collateral needed for an unsecured loan. A bank or NBFC assesses factors such as your credit history, income, existing obligations, employment or business profile and its own eligibility criteria.
RBI raised risk weights on personal loans and credit cards in November 2023. That's a direct reason rates run higher today.
Personal loans, credit cards, BNPL, payday loans, and peer-to-peer lending all fall under this category.
If several unsecured loans start piling up, FREED can help through consolidation or settlement, depending on your situation.
What Is an Unsecured Loan?
Walk into a bank for a personal loan, and nobody asks you to bring papers for a house or a vehicle. That's the entire idea behind an unsecured loan: credit given without pledging any asset as security. A bank or NBFC studies your credit score, your income, your repayment history, and how stable your job looks, and decides on that alone.
A secured loan works differently. A home loan or a gold loan has the asset itself sitting behind it. Stop paying, and the bank has something to recover value from. An unsecured loan carries no such backup, so your profile as a borrower is doing all the work.
This category covers personal loans, credit cards, BNPL, payday loans and instant loan apps, and peer-to-peer lending. It does not cover home loans, car loans, gold loans, education loans, or bike loans. Those sit outside this piece, and outside what FREED touches at all.
Education loans need one clarification most articles skip. Education loans can be secured or unsecured depending on the loan amount, lender requirements and the security or co-applicant provided. The larger portion of most education loans needs backing, so don't lump the whole product into this category.
The pricing gap between the two categories comes down to exactly one thing: risk.

Check My ScoreWhy Unsecured Loans Cost More Than Secured Loans
A bank holding an unsecured loan has nothing to fall back on if you stop paying. No property to auction, no gold to recover. That gap gets priced straight into your interest rate before you even apply.
Regulation added to this cost in November 2023. RBI raised the capital that banks and NBFCs must set aside against unsecured lending. Bank personal loan risk weight moved from 100% to 125%. Bank credit card receivables moved from 125% to 150%. NBFC consumer credit and card exposure moved from 100% to 125%.
A risk weight is just the capital cushion a bank or NBFC has to hold against a loan sitting on its books. Push that number up, and the loan gets more expensive for the bank to carry. That extra cost lands on your rate, not on the bank's margin. Housing, education, vehicle, and gold-backed loans stayed untouched by this change, since the rule targeted unsecured exposure specifically, not lending in general.
None of this makes an unsecured loan a bad choice. It just explains why the number on your sanction letter looks the way it does.
What the Law Says
RBI raised the risk weight on personal loans and credit card receivables in November 2023, a key reason unsecured borrowing costs more than it did before.
Check your optionsWhen Does an Unsecured Loan Make Sense?
- You don't have a high-value asset to pledge, or don't want to risk one. Plenty of borrowers simply don't have property or gold sitting around to offer.
- You need funds fast. A secured loan waits on asset valuation. Unsecured approval, especially on a digital platform, can clear in hours.
- The amount needed is modest against your income. This category was built for exactly that scale of borrowing.
- Your credit score and repayment history already carry weight on their own. No asset needed to prove what your history already shows.
- The need is short-term: a medical bill, a wedding cost, a relocation, rather than a large purchase that already has its own secured product.
One caution belongs here on its own. Don't take a new unsecured loan just to cover an existing EMI you're already struggling with. That's a separate problem, and it tends to get worse, not better, with more debt stacked on top. If you're starting to feel that pressure, are unsecured loans becoming your enemy covers that exact situation in depth.
How to Apply for an Unsecured Loan, Step by Step
- 1
Check your credit score first.
Most banks and NBFCs set a minimum. Checking your credit profile before applying can help you assess whether the product is likely to fit your situation and avoid unnecessary applications.
- 2
Compare 2 to 3 options
on interest rate, processing fee, and prepayment charges. A low headline rate can still turn into an expensive loan once the fees are added in.
- 3
Keep your documents ready:
PAN, income proof (salary slips, or ITR if you're self-employed), bank statements, and address proof.
- 4
Apply
Most digital platforms finish this in one sitting, sometimes within the same day.
- 5
Read the loan agreement before you sign.
Look at the APR and the Key Facts Statement (KFS), where applicable, rather than comparing only the headline interest rate. Review all disclosed fees and charges before signing. This is the step most people skip, and it's exactly where the hidden charges live. If you're actually trying to compare several existing unsecured loans against each other, rather than take on
Types of Unsecured Loans in India
Personal loans. Fixed EMI, fixed tenure, and a wide range of uses: medical costs, travel, weddings, home renovation. Approval leans mainly on your credit score and income.
Credit cards. Revolving credit up to a set limit. Interest applies only on whatever balance you carry forward, never on what you clear in full each cycle. If you don't pay the full amount due by the applicable due date, interest and other applicable charges may apply according to the card's terms. How interest is calculated depends on the issuer and the transaction history. Most people assume "interest-free" applies no matter what they pay. It doesn't.
BNPL (buy now, pay later). Some BNPL products may offer interest-free repayment within a specified period, while others can involve fees or interest. Check the provider's terms before using the facility. Miss that window, and late charges plus credit bureau reporting follow. This is credit, reported the same way any other credit is, not free money with a different name.
Payday loans and instant loan apps. Very short tenure, and the effective interest can run high. RBI has shut down a large number of unlicensed lending apps in recent years, so stick to RBI-registered NBFCs or their officially listed digital partners. An app with no traceable licence is exactly where trouble starts.
Peer-to-peer (P2P) lending. RBI-regulated NBFC-P2P platforms match individual lenders to individual borrowers, usually for smaller ticket sizes.
The unsecured portion of education loans. Typically the smaller slice. Larger amounts usually need a co-applicant or security, so this stays brief here, FREED doesn't service education loans either way.
Unsecured business loans exist too, sitting entirely outside individual borrowing and outside this piece.
What the Law Says
RBI regulates peer-to-peer lending through licensed NBFC-P2P platforms. P2P lending platforms in India are regulated as NBFC-P2Ps under RBI's framework. Borrowers should verify that the platform and relevant lender operate within the applicable regulatory framework. Borrowing outside this regulated structure carries real risk.
Check your optionsSecured Loan vs Unsecured Loan
Feature | Secured Loan | Unsecured Loan |
Collateral needed | Yes, property, gold, vehicle | No |
Interest rate | Generally lower | Generally higher |
Approval speed | Slower, asset valuation required | Faster, often digital-first |
Loan amount range | Typically higher, tied to asset value | Typically lower, tied to income and score |
Documentation | Asset papers plus income proof | Income and identity proof only |
No pledged collateral | Bank/NBFC can recover the pledged asset | No specific collateral is pledged, but the lender can still pursue collection and legal recovery remedies if the borrower defaults. |
Which one fits depends on what you're funding, not on which category sounds safer. A small home renovation rarely justifies a home loan's paperwork. The house itself almost always does.
Benefits and Risks of Unsecured Loans
Benefits:
- No specific collateral is pledged against the loan, although default can still lead to collection and legal recovery action.
- Faster approval and disbursal than secured loans, often same-day on digital platforms.
- Personal loans stay flexible on end-use, unlike a home or car loan locked to one purchase.
- Minimal documentation on most digital lending platforms.
- On-time repayment builds your credit history, which pays off on every future application.
Risks:
- Interest runs higher than secured loans, for the risk reasons covered above.
- Missed payments can negatively affect your credit profile, regardless of whether the underlying loan is secured or unsecured.
- Over-borrowing is easy across multiple unsecured products, since none of them share a single collateral check the way a secured loan does. Every new card or loan is its own separate obligation, stacked on whatever came before it.
When unsecured EMIs together start eating a large share of your income, that's a load problem with its own fix: consolidation if you're still repaying, settlement only if you genuinely can't. Here's what each of those actually looks like.
Freed Expert Tip
Keep your total EMI burden at a level that leaves enough income for essential expenses and unexpected costs. Cross that line and it's worth reviewing your options before the load gets harder to manage.
Check your optionsHow FREED Helps If Multiple Unsecured Loans Get Hard to Manage
If you're current on payments but stretched across several unsecured EMIs, FREED's Debt Consolidation Program, known to customers as Reduce My EMI, was built for exactly this stage.
FREED assesses your existing unsecured loans and credit card dues, then matches your profile to a lending partner from its network. That partner disburses one new loan that pays off your existing eligible unsecured debt instantly, personal loans, cards, BNPL, payday loans, and peer-to-peer loans included. Where approved on suitable terms, consolidation can combine eligible debts into a single repayment arrangement and may reduce the monthly EMI. Consistent, on-time repayment of the new facility can help strengthen your credit profile over time.
One distinction matters more than any other at this stage: consolidation improves your CIBIL score, it doesn't drop it. The new loan reports as paid on time, and that's what moves your number up. This is the single biggest difference from settlement, worth knowing early, since a lot of people assume every debt solution costs them credit points. FREED only charges its success-based fee once consolidation actually completes, and this program steps in before default, not after.
See What Consolidation Could Save You
Juggling more than one unsecured EMI makes it hard to picture what a single lower payment would actually look like. Enter your total unsecured debt, the number of loans or cards involved, and your combined monthly EMI. The estimate depends on the assumed consolidation interest rate, tenure, fees, and the debts included. Actual terms depend on lender approval.
Tips to Use Unsecured Loans Responsibly
- Borrow only what your EMI can absorb comfortably, not the maximum a bank or NBFC is willing to offer. Approval and affordability aren't the same test.
- Check the APR, not the advertised rate. Fees change the real cost of a loan, sometimes by a meaningful margin.
- Add up every unsecured EMI you carry and keep the total under roughly half your take-home income. Cross that line, and the load starts working against you instead of for you.
- Never take a new unsecured loan to cover an old one's EMI. Treat that moment as a signal to look at consolidation, not as a reason to borrow further.
- Pull your credit report every few months. Catching an error or an unexplained dip early beats discovering it during your next application.
If your own score needs a closer look before your next application, checking your credit report takes a few minutes and shows exactly what's shaping your number today.
